May/June 2023 School PicnicOMS held its annual end-of-the-year school picnic on June 3rd at the Marijane Hamann Park in San Jose. This was a wonderful opportunity for the children, parents and the OMS team to come together, catch up and reminisce about the 2022/2023 school year. Elementary FundraiserThe Elementary children held their annual fundraising event from June 19th through June 23rd. During this week, they sold items including books, knitted bracelets, headbands, purses, puppet kits, baked goods, beverages, pottery, and paintings. The week ended with a Gala night on Friday where they shared their talents and skills. This year's proceeds will benefit One Tree Planted and The Marine Mammal Center. Both organizations were chosen by the children. Teacher Appreciation WeekCelebrated each year during the first week in May, Teacher Appreciation Week is a special time to say 'thank you’ to the extraordinary educators who work tirelessly with children and families throughout the year. This year, the team was treated to a lovely lunch with desserts, presented with flowers and had the honor of having a tree planted in their name. We thank each and every person who made our teachers at OMS feel special. Farm Immersion ProgramThe Elementary children recently had a three-day two-night farm experience at Live Earth Farm in the Santa Cruz mountains. They came away with a new respect for the land and those who farm it, a deeper connection to food, and a better understanding of their role in the local and global food system. The children were able to learn about all the steps necessary to bring fresh produce to market. They sowed seeds; planted crops; cultivated fields and garden beds; harvested their own lunch; and tended some of the farm animals. This was also a wonderful opportunity to not only enjoy being in nature but also to cultivate deeper relationships with their classmates.
