In 2025, the 50th anniversary of Dmitry Shostakovich's death will be commemorated. On this occasion, pianist Yulianna Avdeeva is dedicating herself intensively to his cycle 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87. This masterpiece has become an integral part of the concert repertoire. The Steinway Artist will present it at numerous prestigious venues, including the Salzburg Festival.
At the same time, Yulianna Avdeeva is recording the 24
Preludes and Fugues for Pentatone. The album will be released on 30 May (see below), coinciding with her performance of the cycle at the Shostakovich Festival in Leipzig’s Gewandhaus.
The first interpreter of this work was Tatyana Nikolayeva, a close confidante of Shostakovich who also served as his inspiration for the cycle. In 1950, the Russian pianist won the first Leipzig Bach Competition, after which Shostakovich, a jury member,
composed the 24 Preludes and Fugues for her, inspired by Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. Nikolayeva premiered the cycle to great acclaim.
Now, Yulianna Avdeeva becomes only the second pianist after Tatyana Nikolayeva to perform and record the entire work.
