Week of September 26, 2022

Chris Siebenaler, CEO, Regional Senior Vice President

Sugar Land Team,

I was so happy to be at the Vizient Conference last week where it was announced that HMSL was ranked #2 out of 127 for Large Specialized Complex Care Medical Centers. For this award, Vizient measures safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and equity. These are areas of care you all are dedicated to on a daily basis and you should be proud of this recognition.

Additionally, HMH was ranked  #6 out of 107 for Comprehensive Academic Medical Centers and four other community hospitals made rankings as Complex Care Medical Centers among 148 other hospitals. You can read more in a message from Dr. Boom here.

It is a pleasure and honor to work beside you all on the path to unparalleled.

Your Stories of Change

As you’ve watched the last two weeks, Daily Management will transform the way our hospital connects each of us, allowing for a more efficient and effective organization. This will impact everyone’s unit, giving each of us a voice in how we improve. There are certain departments that have already rolled out elements such as huddle boards, and they are enthusiastic about the positive impacts that are improving our outcomes and quality of work life. Watch the video below to hear their stories.

And don’t forget! Now through October 10, we will give away a Space Cowboys jersey to 20 employees who view that week's Daily Management video. That's 100 winners! Each contest closes the Sunday after the newsletter is sent. Good luck!

New Resuscitation Education Program Coming Soon

Tuesday, November 1, HMSL will implement HeartCode® Complete, an American Heart Association® and Laerdal® program for Basic Life Support (BLS) renewal course. Instead of attending an in-person, instructor-led BLS renewal course every two years, you will take the online HeartCode® Complete course and perform your skills at one of the three manikin carts. Your time off the unit or department is dramatically reduced when compared to the in-person classes we used to rely on for CPR renewal training, giving you more time to care for your patients. Upon course completion, you will receive an AHA eCard that will be valid for two years. Save and print this flyer for your unit.

Meet the Manikin Dates:

October 3, 5, 7, 10 and 24

Location: Across from Main Pavilion Starbucks

Time: 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory Rotations

Houston Methodist welcomes the newest class of Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory students who will rotate at select campuses across our system, including HMSL. Cristo Rey is a longstanding community partner that exclusively serves young men and women who desire a college prep education but could not otherwise afford to attend a private high school.

Houston Methodist helps these students to be college-ready and career-prepared through this innovative work-study program. The students will be working at Houston Methodist until May 2023. Please give them a warm welcome if you see them.

Walk to End Alzheimer's

Join HMSL’s Walk to End Alzheimer's team! Alzheimer's Disease is a devastating disease that impacts so many of us. Help us support the Alzheimer’s Association’s biggest event, which raises money for research, care and support. The 3.1 mile walk takes place October 29 at Brazos River Park. Events begin at 8:00 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:00 a.m.

HM Podcast

You can now hear health and wellness advice first-hand on the new On Health podcast. New episodes will be released every Tuesday morning. Each week, hosts will be joined by a Houston Methodist expert to explore an everyday wellness trend or significant health topic. You can click here to listen or listen wherever you already listen to podcasts.

Convenience Corner: #LifeHacks

Our team members wear multiple hats. They are dedicated caregivers while at work but are partners, parents, children, neighbors, volunteers, hobbyists and more. This week, we’re featuring a tip from a co-worker to make your everyday life just a little bit easier.

Employee: Selina Garcia, Project Manager, Business Development
Selina's #LifeHack: iOS 16 Tips

"If you have an iPhone and have updated to the new iOS 16, your Lock Screen can now be edited with widgets! Being able to have information such as upcoming appointments, weather, precipitation chances, and even fitness goals at a glance helps me with my busy schedule. Now I don’t even have to unlock my phone to see that my child has baseball practice at 6 p.m. or that the chance of rain is 50% so I may need an umbrella for it. Simply press and hold your lock screen and click the ‘customize’ button when it appears to add your widgets of choice."

If you have a trick, shortcut, skill, or novelty method that you use to make your life easier and more convenient – please share it with us by emailing Rashna Barge.

PATIENT COMPLIMENTS

This week's patient compliment comes from a person with a close HSML connection, who has worked in a contract capacity as a writer for our marketing department for more than a decade.

"Just wanted to let you know that my mom had her hip replaced by Dr. Dewan last week. She was basically in the hospital two full days on Six Main.

I know I write about I CARE values a lot for HMSL, but it’s always so amazing to see them displayed first-hand. Every single staff member we encountered was kind, compassionate and helpful. I even had a random manager in the elevator ask me if my family member was receiving excellent care! She encouraged me to reach out to our nurses if we ever needed anything. The cheerful greetings from staff and personal attention make a huge difference.

I wish I had everyone’s name so I could pass them along, but the only one I can remember was the nurse, Theresa, who did such a great job of caring for mom after surgery – which wasn’t easy because mom isn’t the best patient! And the PT/OT staff had such positive attitudes that they got mom moving even when she didn’t want to. But really, we didn’t have a single interaction with staff that wasn’t positive.

All in all, it was a great experience and I am extremely grateful to everyone at HMSL!
