Season's Greetings

2021 has been a busy and productive year for AP4D, with several diagnostic, dialogue and briefing events held over the past 12 months and more planned for 2022. Our sincere thanks go out to our wonderful Options Paper working groups and editors, our esteemed Advisory Group members, the Australian Civil-Military Centre, and everyone that has been involved with AP4D.

We would like to wish everybody a safe and relaxing summer holiday period and a happy New Year. Stay tuned for announcements as we launch our first publications in early 2022!

Our people

AP4D would like to welcome Tom Barber as our new Program Officer. Tom’s previous experience at La Trobe Asia and Deakin University make him a valuable addition to the team.

The AP4D Advisory Group is co-chaired by Marc Purcell and Michael Wesley.

Recent commentary by Advisory Group members include:

  • Michael Wesley on the need for a new and inclusive Asia narrative

  • Bridi Rice & Richard Maude on Joe Biden’s Summit for Democracy

  • Caitlin Byrne on art as diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific

Our program

AP4D’s inaugural program is divided into consecutive regional phases, with the first Southeast Asia component nearing completion. Each phase begins with a compendium of research that covers policy foundations, commentary & analysis, and regional perspectives (download our Southeast Asia compendium of research here). This informs subsequent diagnostic and dialogue sessions, in which working groups of experts collaborate on the creation of Options Papers.

Our recent November roundtable offered the Southeast Asia working groups the opportunity to present their draft papers for feedback to the AP4D Advisory Group and senior representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Department of Defence and Department of Home Affairs. AP4D would like to extend sincere thanks to everyone involved in the roundtable and the Options Paper process. In particular, we acknowledge the government representatives who gave their time to participate.

The Pacific component of AP4D’s inaugural program is commencing soon. If you’re part of Australia’s development, diplomacy or defence community and are interested in being involved, please get in touch at secretariat@asiapacific4d.com.
