Issue N. 6                                                                                                          February 2022

The Evidence and Intelligence for Action in Health Department at PAHO, launched a quarterly newsletter in December 2020 to help personnel and external audiences stay informed about the work of WHO Collaborating Centres (CCs) located in the Region of the Americas, in support of our goals and mandates.

In this issue, we provide a global perspective of CCs and showcase how they are supporting both global and regional mandates. Scroll through to see the distribution of CCs, video interviews, and brief stories of CCs' support to PAHO/WHO.

Network of  WHO CCs  for
Children's Environmental Health

ACTIVITY: The network's members work together  to provide support to WHO on children’s environmental health (CEH). Examples of this collaboration include: providing input for the  first WHO report on e-waste and child health;  and developing background documents and journal reviews, among others.

IMPACT: These activities are  building evidence and research capacities for CEH globally and developing interventions aimed at reducing exposure and preventing/decreasing the burden of disease for children.

PAHO/WHO CC for Ethics (CAN-58) and PAHO/WHO CC in Ethics and Global Health Policy (USA-330)

ACTIVITY: The CCs provided support for a major WHO initiative to address challenges in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by contributing to an 18-month deliberation on the Ethics & Governance of Artificial Intelligence for Health guidance document.

IMPACT: By identifying the ethical concerns raised by AI and providing frameworks to address such concerns, the document will help support the responsible use of AI in health by technology developers, ministries of health and healthcare workers, so all populations can benefit equally from these technologies.
