You can use our campaigns on telehealth access and lung cancer research funding to quickly send a prepared message to your legislators. You can also sign up to receive news and additional advocacy opportunities on the LUNGevity Action Network. Moving the Dial for the Early Detection of Lung CancerLUNGevity and Rising Tide Foundation for Clinical Cancer Research are proud to support innovative research aimed at dramatically reducing lung cancer-related mortality. Abhijit Patel, MD, PhD, from Yale University School of Medicine, received our 2024 research award to support his work to create a routine blood test that could revolutionize the way we detect lung cancer. This research could also have broader implications to help us diagnose lung cancer more efficiently. By identifying and diagnosing the disease at its earliest stages, when it is most treatable, we will be taking a significant step toward saving lives. Learn more about this exciting research that is likely to move the dial for the early detection of lung cancer. International ActionFollow cancer survivor and inspirational adventurer Sean Swarner as he prepares for an extraordinary journey: completing seven consecutive marathons in one week, on each of the continents of the world, to raise awareness for lung cancer and emphasize that anyone with lungs can get lung cancer. This remarkable feat will begin tomorrow, November 15, and go through November 21 as part of The Great World Race. Learn more at www.lungevity.org/seanswarner and help Sean raise awareness and vital funds for lung cancer research. Early Detection Saves Lives: Get Screened! On Saturday, November 9, for National Lung Cancer Screening Day, LUNGevity partnered with local health centers across the country to offer free screenings to eligible people. We are thankful to the healthcare partners who joined us in the effort and helped host these events, which allowed walk-ins, to help reduce some of the common barriers that prevent people from getting screened. Celebrating Hope, Progress, and a Record-Breaking Evening! The 12th Annual Celebration of Hope and Progress, chaired by Lynne Doughtie and Jess Kimball Leslie with vice chairs Elizabeth and Haitham Wahab, surpassed expectations, raising nearly $1 million with over $200,000 contributed during the evening alone! Nearly 300 attendees gathered to support LUNGevity’s mission. Highlights of the evening included presentation of the Face of Hope Award to Lecia Sequist, MD, MPH, for her impactful work in lung cancer care, and inspiring research updates from Christine Lovly, MD, PhD. The night also welcomed over 100 young professionals to a cocktail party chaired by Nichole Cohen and Gabrielle Cron, where 2014 LUNGevity Career Development Awardee JT Poirier, PhD, inspired the next generation of leaders. A special thanks to DJ and lung cancer survivor April Larken for keeping the energy high at both the young professionals’ event and the after-party. It was a memorable evening of generosity, inspiration, and a community with an unwavering commitment to transforming how people are diagnosed and live with lung cancer. TOGETHER, we’re building a future filled with more lung cancer awareness, support, and hope than ever before! 41 Athletes, 1 Cause: Team LUNGevity in the Big AppleEarlier this month, 41 Team LUNGevity athletes took on the TCS New York City Marathon with unmatched energy and determination, shattering records and raising more than $200,000—the highest fundraising total for this event yet! Among those is a powerhouse athlete and true champion for lung cancer, Frank Wannop. In October, Frank crossed the finish line of his 10th Bank of America Chicago Marathon with Team LUNGevity, and he didn’t stop there. Just weeks later, he brought his dedication, heart, and inspiring spirit to the streets of New York for his first TCS New York City Marathon. Running in memory of his wife, Frank has created a legacy of hope and action reminding us all why we’re racing to stop lung cancer. Way to go, Frank and Team LUNGevity! Plus, you can listen to the important discussions by Jill Feldman and Laura Book, members of the EGFR Resisters, who ask key questions and share their insights and experiences. Dr. Reuben, from MD Anderson Cancer Center, is a 2023 EGFR Resisters /LUNGevity Foundation grant recipient who is working on engineering T cells to treat several types of lung cancer – including EGFR-positive non-small cell lung cancer. Empowering Patients to Make Clinical Trials BetterPatients know what they need to comfortably participate in a clinical trial. Maybe it's the convenience of being treated at a local hospital. Or technology to help them easily communicate with their health care team about side effects. Or childcare support during their treatments. When patients (and caregivers) share their needs to help design clinical trials, the trials are better. And so are the results. But how can patients get involved? Join Rising Tide Foundation for Clinical Cancer Research and LUNGevity Foundation for a series of three webinars to explore how patients and researchers can work together to create clinical trials that answer big questions while minimizing the burden on participants.
