Saturday Edition
Good morning and happy Saturday, members! We hope you’re all enjoying your weekend so far and are staying warm & cosy, particularly if you’re in one of the southern states like we are. We have a lot of fun things planned for today, so get comfortable and settle in!
First, let’s look at the answer to yesterday’s riddle. In case you need a reminder, here it is:
A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
Many of you, including us, answered 10c, but the answer is actually 5c! Why? Well, we warned you this was a bit of a trick question. If the ball cost 10c, and the bat costs $1 more than that, it’d cost $1.10, which means the bat and ball combined would cost $1.20. If the ball costs 5c and the bat costs $1 more than that, it’d cost $1.05, which would give us the correct total of $1.10.
Whew, that was a tough one, eh? Don’t feel too bad if you got it wrong though. This ‘riddle’ is actually a test developed by a professor at Harvard, Shane Federick, back in 2005. Along with a few other questions, it was explicitly designed to deceive readers into giving an automatic response, and only 17% of the participants in their studies (who were students from top universities) got all of them correct.
The real question is, where do you get such affordable sporting equipment? 😉
If you got this one correct, then give yourself a pat on the back and you’ll find a shoutout waiting for you further down this newsletter. If not, don’t worry, like we said it was designed by a Harvard professor to deliberately fool you. The important thing is that you gave it a go.
Now onto our next segment, ‘What Would the Grandkids Say?’ Today, we’re taking a look at the term “Okurrr.” This term was made popular by the American rapper Cardi B and pronounced as o-kuhr as in “okay” with a rolling R sound in a high tone at the end. It’s often used to agree with someone, show that you’re excited about something, or emphasise a point. It’s a bit of a sassy term, so it’s usually used amongst friends. So next time your grandkids are talking about something they’re excited about, throw in an ‘Okurrr’ and see how they react!

“Step back, please; the door is closing.” Remember elevator operators back in the day? They were a common sight, working in shopping malls, hotels, and office buildings. They were in charge of operating the lifts, assisting passengers, and providing customer service. They were the epitome of style and sophistication, always dressed impeccably in their uniforms. If you asked them if they liked being a lift attendant, they would say, "It's okay. It has its ups and downs." This joke still never fails to make us laugh!
