By: Julie Larson, HOPE Summit Keynote Speaker

LUNGevity announced that Julie Larson, a licensed clinical social worker with a focus area that includes helping people living with cancer, will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming LUNGevity HOPE Summit, May 5-7 in Rockville, Maryland.

In preparation for the Summit, Julie wrote an article for LUNGevity about the emotional toll a cancer diagnosis has on the entire family.

In it, she shares tips for being a good friend and caregiver, and gives reassurance about some of the emotions you may be feeling as you try to help.

Cancer Grand Challenge Summit – Cancer Cachexia

At the Cancer Grand Challenge Summit that took place in early March in London, LUNGevity and other participating organizations convened for an annual review of progress for each Cancer Grand Challenge grant. Attendees shared updates and fostered cross-team collaborations.

LUNGevity is the US patient advocacy organization on the team, composed of investigators from across the UK and US, that received $25M to take on the challenge of cancer cachexia, the debilitating wasting condition responsible for up to 30% of cancer-related deaths. The grant is focused on understanding the underlying causes of cachexia and developing tailored treatment interventions to help the individuals it affects.

Amy Moore, PhD, Vice President, Global Engagement and Patient Partnerships for LUNGevity, participated in the sessions including a panel on global patient advocacy.

Targeted Therapies of Lung Cancer

Last month LUNGevity attended the annual IASLC Targeted Therapies of Lung Cancer Meeting, a key conference dedicated to bringing stakeholders (such as clinicians, pharmaceutical companies, patient advocates, and researchers) together to discuss the development of treatments for lung cancer in Santa Monica, CA.

The conference began with a special opening session dedicated to the exciting progress on the horizon for treating small cell lung cancer. In the days that followed, there was a strong focus on biomarker-based treatments for known and new biomarker targets as well as a new focus on early-stage disease management.
