This week: tools, resources and opportunities to help you lead your professional practice YOUR FORTNIGHTLY NSEAD UPDATETime to stand together ![]() ![]() Image caption, Liz and Marlene; and Marlene Wylie, Photo © Ella Doran Welcome all to a New Year, with much to give us hope and focus for art, craft and design education. Over the coming months there will be plenty to inspire, educate and celebrate. And, we begin the year in that spirit as we give a huge thanks to our outgoing President Liz MacFarlane, and welcome President Marlene Wylie. I want to thank Liz for her incredible support over the last three years – firstly as President Elect alongside President Dr Rachel Payne, and then as President guiding the Society through two challenging years. Liz has been a constant support, bringing a much-needed pragmatism to the role. Her work to build relationships with the DfE and other policymakers has been invaluable, ensuring that NSEAD is always recognised as the leading organisation for art, craft and design education. Liz will make the official handover of the presidency at our first meeting of Council this year, on the 28th January, when we will meet online and/or at the Whitworth in Manchester. Marlene takes up the Presidency at a time of historic shift in education, and society. I know that she has a strong vision for NSEAD, and her work has only just begun. Watch out world! Other News A note about strike action We know that many of our members are concerned about possible strike action by education unions in England. To recap, NSEAD held an indicative ballot amongst trade union members to gauge the appetite for industrial action in the autumn last year, at the same time as the other trade unions, by the same process. There were three official emails to members, sent by election services provider UKEngage, plus a reminder email from NSEAD on 12 October, as well as reminders in these fortnightly newsletters, on our website and on social media. This was an important step to see if we could meet the thresholds required for a formal postal ballot for action. The clear majority of our Trade Union members were in favour of staying in the classroom and did not vote for action. It remains to be seen if the other education unions will get a mandate for strike action, as it is a complex issue for many. Whilst it is true that NSEAD members have not come out in favour of strike, there are lots ways that we can show solidarity if other trade unions decide to strike, and we will provide full guidance to members should that happen. However, it is important to know that legally you are not protected if you join action that your TU has not got a mandate for. The legal position is explained in full on our Trade Union website pages. Please contact us if you have further concerns.
