MUST READ: Testing for marijuana use remains a fraught issue for NJ employers As more and more states opt to legalize marijuana, the overall uptick in cannabis use in the U.S. is prompting a growing number of companies to reconsider drug testing policies for job applicants. The state Civil Service Commission has rejected Jersey City’s position that it can fire police officers for using recreational cannabis, the third consecutive setback for the city. Firefighters and EMS workers across New Jersey are expressing frustration over a lack of clear guidelines regulating their recreational use of marijuana when off duty. In states where recreational cannabis has been legalized, young adults not in college were more likely to become frequent users and more likely to meet the criteria for cannabis use disorder than their college-enrolled counterparts, according to a study published this month by Oregon State University. Reps. Jamie Raskin, D-Md.; Nancy Mace, R-S.C.; and Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., introduced the Cannabis Users Restoration of Eligibility (CURE) Act, which would prevent prior or current marijuana use from becoming grounds for not being offered federal employment or not receiving a security clearance.
