Makuru is the coldest and wettest time of the year, and sees animals including Black Swans (Mali) pairing up in preparation for their breeding season.

Bird Flu has Reached WA: What Perth Residents Need to Know
We’ve all seen the news about the global bird flu over the last few years, but it always felt a long way away from us here in Western Australia. Recently, that changed.
The virus has been found on our mainland for the first time, carried here by wild seabirds landing on our southern coasts.

Seeding the Future: Alkimos Primary grows a Cockatoo Corridor
In the surrounds of Alkimos Primary School, students, teachers and community partners like Perth NRM and City of Wanneroo are proving what’s possible when we bring nature home.
Two new revegetation corridors have now been established in reserves on either side of the school at Broadford Park and Axbridge Park, helping rebuild vital feeding habitat for threatened Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoos.
INSPIRING YOUTH STEWARDSHIP FOR NOONGAR BOODJA
Many Hands Make Light Work!
Dwerda Weelardinup (Cantonment Hill) has been a hive of activity during Makuru. The young and young at heart worked on Country to plant six hundred seedlings nurtured by Nuts About Natives and The Wetlands Centre Cockburn nurseries.
The recent rains should give the seedlings a good start and help restore the Honeymyrtle Shrubland Threatened Ecological Community. Perth NRM is pleased to partner with the Friends of Cantonment Hill, local high schools and the City of Fremantle on conservation initiatives supported with funding from the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program.
SAF JULY 2026 UPDATE
Enjoying Makuru and all it has to Offer!
Welcome to the third Sustainable Agriculture Facilitator Update for 2026 and to the beautiful rainy Noongar season of Makuru which has begun to replenish our water systems and recharge our soils.
With all this rain around it can be hard to believe that we are predicted to be heading into a hot spring and summer with below average rainfall forecast. This edition will be focussing on the rainy season and making the most of what the winter weather has to offer while it lasts.

Bupa and Landcare Australia are offering support to community-led urban and semi-urban planting projects across Australia.

COASTAL AND MARINE NEWS
TAFE Students Caring for Our Coast
We had the pleasure of working with a great bunch of TAFE Students at two of our coastal restoration sites. Certificate III Conservation and Ecosystem Management students from the Murdoch and Mandurah campuses joined Perth NRM Coastal Coordinator (south), Wayne Walters for field work at Challenger Beach in Kwinana and Kennedy Bay, Rockingham.
"I really enjoyed working with the students. It is always a rewarding experience to spend time in the field with the next generation of environmental stewards and land carers".

The students looked at biodiversity in coastal flora, adaptions to surviving in a harsh coastal environment and safety in the field while planting out coastal tube stock.

In 2026, the Dieback Working Group proudly marks 30 years since its founding in 1996 by Dr Ian Colquhoun. The DIG Conference 2026 will celebrate this milestone, bringing together practitioners, researchers, land managers, and community partners from across Australia.

Our team celebrates at Ten Ten Chinese Restaurant
We were blessed at our local Chinese restaurant to enjoy an exquisite banquet over 3 tables. This was to thank staff for the hard work in this busy season and to celebrate Ingrid Sieler who marks 10 years of service with Perth NRM.
We are super lucky to retain our loyal team members with previous shout outs to Kate Sputore, Luke McMillan and Melinda McAndrew who have already been with us for 15 years!
Our tables were split into meat lovers, seafood lovers and vegetarians so all appetites were catered for. From prawn crackers, to flowing tea, we loved the Salted Chilli Squid, Plum Sauce duck, a range of noodle dishes, the meal closed with a bowl of lychee ice cream.
