Welcome to your moment to ROAR!
Issue # 19

Dear Friend,

Happy July!

Summer is always a great time to plan for what you will do this Fall. Take a course. Commit to a new Life Layer. Go back to your younger self and reclaim something that you left behind, or start mapping out your next professional chapter. A walk on the beach or in a park, spending time on the water or doing some quiet meditation can help to clear your head to make a commitment to yourself to find your personal ROAR.

This month, we showcase the Academy of Lifelong Learning at New York University. It's only one of many efforts that schools and universities around the country are creating to tap into the desire for people at midlife to continue to learn. Also, in my interview with Dr. Laura Carstensen from the Stanford Center on Longevity in OprahDaily.com (see below), she underscores the importance of keeping our brains engaged by taking on new topics to learn in or out of a classroom. The emphasis is on something new like studying a language or exploring a new skill. It's a habit we should maintain throughout the second half of our lives for brain health and enhanced cognition.

This Fall, we are making big plans to introduce the ROAR forward Summit in New York City. It will be a half day to Re-Imagine the Second Half of Life. There will be a series of panels and conversations around the New Longevity and how it is impacting our world. I'm excited to announce our sponsors: Janus et Cie, L'Oreal, Voya Financial, Wallis Annenberg GenSpace and Weill Cornell Medicine.

For the readers of this newsletter, we will have some limited complimentary tickets made available. In next month's newsletter, we will have more details as to how you can submit a request to attend!!

As always, we have two amazing Re-Imagineers to introduce you to this month. June Archer and Claudia Poccia share their stories of reinvention and reimagination. You can see more Re-Imagineer stories on roarforward.com!

This summer, I'm getting ready for a busy Fall. I've got ROAR talks, webinars, my course at NYU (link here), and the ROAR forward Summit to get ready for. The big news is that I have also joined the UTA (United Talent Agency) roster of speakers. I'm honored to join such a prestigious group of thought leaders! I think I'm going to be very busy over the next year!

Many people ask me if I ever just chill out? This summer has already been filled with family and friends getting together for dinners, working in the garden and catching up on books, movies and series (currently bingeing the new season of The Lincoln Lawyer).

But my best moment is early in the morning with my wonder dog, Hannah, a beautiful vizsla who just turned six years old. An early morning walk on the beach with her is the perfect way to start my day and to think of the many ways that I want to continue to ROAR!

Best,

Michael

ROAR by the Numbers

A study called the Healthy Aging and Body Composition Study with more than two thousand elderly subjects, found that those who ate the most protein (about 18 percent of caloric intake) kept more of their lean body mass over three years than those in the lowest quintile of protein consumption (10 percent of calories). The difference was significant: the low-protein group lost 40 percent more muscle than the high-protein group.

A morning walk with my Vizsla, Hannah, is a perfect start of my day. What’s your morning moment?
