Age-friendly cities and communities in the Americas

As of July 31st, there are a total of 961 cities and communities committed to be age-friendly in the Region of the Americas.

Our newest members include Desamparados, Costa Rica and Uberaba, Brazil​​​​​​​. Welcome!

Age-friendly Environments Knowledge and Action Hubs

Within the framework of the WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, different knowledge and action hubs on age-friendly environments are being established to promote knowledge and action on different issues associated with achieving healthy aging for all. 

We invite you to learn more about the Falls Prevention Hub, established to discuss about how to prevent falls in age-friendly cities and communities. Globally, 75% of fatal falls among older people (aged 70 years and over) occur in low- and middle-income countries, even though only 65% of people aged 70 years and over live in low- and middle-income countries.

Diabfrail-Latam project advances in Latin America

After successful finalization of the research trials showing the benefits of the Diabfrail Latam interventions in communities from Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, the program, composed by an exercise component and education intervention, is being implemented in countries in Latin America in older people with diabetes mellitus. It showed positive results in a better quality of life and improving/avoiding frailty in older adults with diabetes.This project if financed by the European Union, under Horizon 2020 grant.

What is frailty and how to prevent it?

As part of the contribution of the Association of Former PAHO/WHO Staff Members (AFSM) to the work of the Decade of Healthy Aging in the Americas (2021-2030), this webinar's objective is to present recommendations to promote and protect the functionality of older people despite their advanced age (ability to perform actions required in daily life, to maintain the body and to survive independently). This webinar will be in Spanish. A webinar of the same topic will be given in English in September.

Launch of ACAPEM Intermediate Level Virtual Course

The second installment of the Development of Competences in Health Care for Older Persons (ACAPEM) will be officially launched by the Healthy Aging Program and the PAHO Virtual Campus for Public Health. More information to come.

Launch of Age-friendly Environments Virtual Course training course

  • 31 October 2024
  • 10:00 am (EST)

This virtual course will be launched on World Cities Day and aims to provide knowledge on healthy aging and the importance of environments to achieve it, especially from the creation of age-friendly environments, considering their characteristics and the process to carry out concrete actions to transform the local dimension in which people live and develop.
