NEWS UPDATE

18 October 2024

Publishers note

We all know what a big country this is. For me it hit home after doing a bit of traveling this week. I spent a few days in Adelaide, where I endured 30-degree heat. On returning home to Sydney, out came the jackets. And by all reports, the weather in Melbourne has been warm and a bit wet.

A quick scan of the BOM website showed a mixed bag across the country. Weather is a key factor that determines how good your boat outing will be. My advice has always been to ensure you check the BOM website each and every time before you go out. Furthermore, I always suggest to new boaters to spend time understanding how to navigate the BOM website. First-time visitors can find it a bit daunting, and that’s the last thing you want if you're on the water with unexpected weather approaching.

The common lesson for boaters is to always check the weather before heading out. Be aware of warnings, marine conditions, storms, winds, waves, and tides. This can make the difference between an enjoyable day and an emergency situation.

It’s not hard to find weather guides and lessons related to boating. Each state's Maritime Transport office has a guide. Look them up; it's worth the time.

And as you will often hear people say: If in doubt, don’t go out.

I do hope you enjoy this week’s news.
