Dear Friend,

MLA Bailey is away on trade missions for the next week and a half, so we won't have her usual newsletter introduction. This week’s newsletter will focus on events in the riding, a couple of informative sections, and some opportunities for public input.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

The Vancouver South-Granville Team

With Christine Boyle, MLA Vancouver-Little Mountain; Cailey Lynch, Christover Gaze, Artistic Director for Bard on the Beach; and Premier David Eby at the season's opening of Bard on the Beach

National Indigenous Peoples Day

Tomorrow is National Indigenous Peoples Day — a day to celebrate the distinct histories, cultures, and traditions of Indigenous Peoples — First Nations, Métis, and Inuit — across the province. It is also a time to honour the many ways in which the achievements, strength, and leadership of Indigenous Peoples continue to shape B.C. for the better.

There are celebrations happening in communities across B.C., including right here in Vancouver South-Granville. We encourage you to take part — to celebrate, to learn about the First Nations’ territories where you are, and to engage with the cultures, traditions, and languages of local Indigenous Peoples.

For your convenience, we’ve listed several free events happening in our riding tomorrow.

Public input on the Public Interest Disclosure Act

The Special Committee to Review the Public Interest Disclosure Act is seeking input on the Act and the public interest disclosure process.

The Public Interest Disclosure Act (PIDA) is BC’s whistleblower protection legislation for current and former employees of public sector organizations. PIDA also provides protection for public sector employees who speak up about serious or systemic wrongdoing within a public body. All input will be reviewed with a view to inviting presentations this fall.

Written input can be submitted online on the Parliamentary Committees Consultation Portal until 2:00 p.m. (Pacific) on Friday, August 1.

Juneteenth & Black History

Let’s take a moment to talk about Juneteenth. While it is a U.S. holiday — and our own Emancipation Day is marked in August — Juneteenth resonates here in Canada as a reminder that the legacy of slavery, colonialism, and systemic anti-Black racism runs deep in our own history as well. It is a time to reflect on the enduring struggle for freedom and justice, to celebrate the strength and contributions of Black communities, and to reaffirm our collective responsibility to build a more equitable society.

We encourage you to take some time to learn from history, honour the contributions of Black Canadians, and continue the vital work of dismantling anti-Black racism in all its forms. We’ve linked to a well-researched article — complete with additional resources — that explains why Juneteenth remains relevant, even here in Canada.

Pet of the Week!

This summer we’re turning the spotlight on the beloved pets in our community with a brand-new feature: Pet of the Week! Each week, we’ll be featuring one of your adorable pets, whether they’re fluffy, feathery, or even a little scaly – because every kind of companion deserves their moment in the spotlight. Get ready for some serious cuteness!

This week’s feature furry friend is: Lenny

Lenny is a 9-year-old bernedoodle. His favourite spot in South Granville is the Kits beach area. Lenny loves his salmon treats, and his favourite human is anyone who will give him attention (much to his family's chagrin). Lenny is very playful and absolutely loves to run around with other dogs.

If you would like to highlight your furry friend, please send a photo of your pet to: Brenda.Bailey.MLA@leg.bc.ca with the following information:

  • Pet’s name
  • Pet’s breed
  • Pet’s age
  • Favourite spot in the riding
  • Favourite treat/snack
  • Favourite human (if applicable)
  • Any unique quirks or personality traits

Public Input on Democratic and Electoral Reform

The Special Committee on Democratic and Electoral Reform is seeking written input on democratic engagement, voter participation, and electoral reform.

The Special Committee on Democratic and Electoral Reform is an all-party committee of the Legislative Assembly. There are two parts to the Committee’s mandate. The first part is to examine democratic engagement, voter participation, and models for electing Members of the Legislative Assembly, and the second part is to review the administration of the 2024 provincial general election.

Anyone who wishes to provide a written submission must do so via the Parliamentary Committees Consultation Portal by 2:00 p.m. (Pacific) on Friday, July 25, 2025.

B.C. Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program

As you know, we love highlighting the fantastic farmer's markets in our area. This summer we're continuing to support the B.C. Farmers' Market Nutrition Coupon Program, working with market operating partners to distribute coupons to people who need them the most. These coupons help individual families buy local fresh products - including produce, nuts, eggs, dairy products, herbs, vegetable and fruit plants, honey, meat and fish.

This program empowers community partners to support families, seniors, and pregnant people on low incomes to access coupons to buy food that may otherwise be out of reach. This program is operating at over 100 markets in over 90 communities, supporting more than 8,500 households and hundreds of farmers and food producers.

Here in our community, this means that the Kitsilano Farmers Market can supply more locals with delicious homegrown food.
