Sunday Edition
Hello and happy Sunday, members! How are you all? I (Jarred) hope you are feeling fine and dandy today! Well, I don’t need to think of a segue because ‘happy’ is exactly what I want to talk to you about today.
Have you heard the news? Australia is the 12th happiest country in the world, according to the 2023 World Happiness Report. Finland is once again first. Our dear old neighbour New Zealand is ahead of us (just by a bit!) at tenth place. Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom rank below Australia in the top 20. In light of this encouraging news, I’ll ask: what makes you happy to be Australian? Is it the culture? The land? The people? The lifestyle? The odd hot cross bun flavours? The ever-present sense of community?
Whatever your reason is, we’d love to know! Please post your answers here on the forum.
This quote sent in by member @Janelle couldn’t be more timely:
‘Always smile and say hello to everyone because you just might make a difference… Kindness costs nothing, and you should share it with everyone.’
What a reminder, eh? Sure enough, it’s the unexpected and random acts of kindness we come across in our lives that tell us: in a world seemingly gone awry, there will always be compassion and love. So be the light in the lives of others! You don’t need to be a superhero to make a difference — sometimes, all it takes is a smile.
Now, let’s look at what happened across Australia and around the world this week, shall we?
-
YOUR SAY SUNDAY: In Australia, children (estranged included) written out of a will can challenge this with the estate. Do you feel this legal loophole is disrespectful to the will writer's wishes and should be corrected? We want to hear from YOU.
-
This week, we saw some great deals at Coles, Woolworths, ALDI & IGA. From Nescafé Coffee Sachets for $3.80 to any two Hot Cross Bun varieties for just $7! You can still grab some of these
deals today.
-
Medicare confirmed that it owes Aussies $200 million in unclaimed rebates – and to claim these, all eligible individuals have to do is a simple
step: ‘It will take only a few minutes.’
-
It has been a tragic week for the world’s entertainment industry. One Australian icon passed away at the age of 92, another drowned at 66, and lastly, a famous
Star Wars actor shockingly passed away at just 56.
-
RECALL ALERT: Two popular electrical appliances were recalled over major safety concerns, with one reportedly sold nationwide for FIVE YEARS. Do YOU have these products?
-
Watch out for scams! Two hit the headlines this week: a tricky new text scam targeting myGov users and a notorious one making a comeback. Be sure to read these and stay vigilant, members!
-
We released a handy state-by-state Seniors’ Travel Discounts guide for members on the go! From public transport to taxis and even free
flights, this is something you don't want to miss.
-
A new and little-known road rule caused a stir because of its hefty fine of up to $3200! Is this policy fair, or is it a bit too much?
-
A disgruntled shopper took aim at Woolworths after coming across a grocery staple in a disappointing state: ‘Go somewhere else and get fresh!’
-
‘Those poor farmers…’ An eagle-eyed shopper pointed out a detail on Coles milk which prompted a HUGE reaction online. We hope this doesn’t
ruin milk for you!
-
A little-known FREE service at Woolworths and Coles was the topic of conversation after a shopper pointed out that one shop does it better. Do you agree?
-
With Easter just around the corner, ALDI brought back a $24.99 best-selling buy that has been sold out two years in a row. Don’t miss out on it,
folks!
-
‘Woolworths and their sneaky signage.’ The retail giant was criticised for a display some branded ‘disgraceful’. Are they in the wrong? Tell us what you think!
-
Oh, no! Research found that a certain ingredient inside decaf coffee and certain household products could be causing Parkinson's.
-
You can never go wrong with potatoes, but did you know there’s a way to make them even better and healthier? Here’s a clue: all you need is…
-
And lastly, is it true men are no good when it comes to remembering dates? Well, according to this joke from member @Luckyus, they aren’t!

Now here’s something you don’t see every day. At least, not anymore! Who remembers when drive-in theatres such as this one were all the rage? I’ve been told that at the height of their popularity, it was always a mad scramble to get a spot before other people went in. Then there are also the stories of people smuggled in through the boot or just covered with blankets. Ah — and the various gimmicks when it came to seats! Some parked their cars in reverse, and some were even said to bring pillows and mattresses, all for the sake of a comfortable movie-watching experience. And don’t even get us started on the action in the backseats… Okay, not going there! 😉 How about you? What memories of drive-in theatres do you have? Tell us in the forum!

Got Health insurance? Your Premiums Are Going Up Yet Again*
A health insurance rate rise of 2.90% is what Aussies are being slapped with during a cost-of-living crisis. We’ve seen mortgage rates increase, grocery prices spike, petrol prices peak, and now our health insurance premiums will be increasing by an average of 2.90%.
From 1 April 2023, Australians over the age of 65 could be paying up to $167* more per year for their health insurance and that’s just for those of you who are not with one of the ‘Big Five’ health insurers - think BUPA, Medibank, HCF, nib and HBF - if you are with one of the ‘Big Five’ you could be paying up to $194* per year for the exact same cover you currently have.
