WA agrifood businesses connected to emerging market at HOFEX

Western Australian agrifood and beverages showcased at one of the Asian region's leading trade exhibitions, HOFEX Hong Kong, with the support of the WA Government.

WA's display featured 13 businesses, covering a wide range of seafood, condiments, healthy snacks and beverages, artisanal spirits, and luxury gourmet hampers.

The event, which attracted more than 30,000 visitors, is a key platform for businesses to promote their products to potential export customers from the Asia Pacific Region.

Hong Kong is a strategically important trading partner for WA agrifood exports, worth more than $215 million per annum. It is considered a gateway into the Northeast Asia market and a growing market for premium, quality produce.

WA businesses had the opportunity to gain insights into these key markets, with briefings, retail visits and introductions organised by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

Large international trade exhibitions, like HOFEX, are a key component of the WA Government's Diversify WA program to promote WA businesses' unique strengths and capabilities.

HOFEX is a new addition to the State's program of trade exhibitions, including Food & Hotel Asia Singapore last month, FOODEX Japan in March, and Gulfood UAE in February 2025.

Juicy new products add value for WA's iconic Bravo apple and local growers

Fruit lovers will have their pick of new ways to enjoy Western Australia's Bravo apples, with rosy, pink apple juice now available and fresh, long-life apple slices soon to be in store.

The new products are the result of scientific research to extend the shelf life of the popular, deep burgundy, WA-bred apple.

The products, marketed under the trademark Soluna, will be sold in independent supermarkets across WA.

The Soluna Apple Juice was cold-pressed locally by experienced beverage processor Pressed Earth.

High-pressure processing was then used to extend the life of the juice to 90 days at the WA Government's $12.2 million state-of-the-art Sustainable Innovative Food Technologies (SIFT) Centre in the Food Innovation Precinct WA.

The new offerings stem from a pilot project between the Fruit West Co-operative, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), Murdoch University, German machinery manufacturer Bruker BioSpin, and the Future Food Systems Cooperative Research Centre.

The juice and long-life slices form part of a broader initiative that includes verifying the health benefits of Bravo apples.

This research will provide a competitive market advantage and diversify options for value-added apple products, backed by scientific evidence and proven product performance.

Fruit West is also exploring export opportunities for the Soluna juice and slices in Asia and the Middle East.

The initiative forms part of Fruit West's strategy to capture new domestic and international markets for value-added apple products, boosting orchard sustainability and profitability.

The variety is now WA's biggest apple export, contributing to Australian supplies set to exceed last year's sales of more than 740 tonnes sold to Asia and the Middle East.

Wheat quality market support for Southeast Asia

Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre's (AEGIC) education and insights team has been highly active in Southeast Asia, providing market support seminars and collecting customer preferences for wheat quality.

During April 2025, AEGIC delivered Australian wheat quality seminars to flour millers, food manufacturers, grain traders and other grains industry representatives across Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

AEGIC’s 2025 seminars, led by Dr Larisa Cato, focused on the quality and functionality of Australian wheat for noodles and bread for this important market.

The annual seminars were well attended by customers who highly appreciate the kind of market support and education that AEGIC provides.

AEGIC team has also been working with customers in the region to document their wheat quality preferences as part of the Wheat quality market intelligence: South East Asia project.

The project – an investment of Grains Australia – is investigating the wheat quality requirements of customers in key South East Asian markets.

The new project will deliver up to date objective quality requirements for baked products and noodles in the region. The new project also focuses on documenting the needs of our customers for their steamed bun, cake and cookie products, which will inform soft wheat breeding programs.
