Choosing A Levels: Follow Your Passions, Think Ahead

Choosing your A Levels can feel like a big decision, but here’s a tip: follow your passions. Subjects you genuinely enjoy will keep you motivated and engaged. However, it’s also worth thinking ahead – some careers or university courses may require specific subjects, so do a little research on future pathways.

Balance is Key: If you're torn between passion and practicality, consider a mix of both. Subjects you love, alongside those that align with your future goals, can open more doors than you think.

Helpful Resource: Head to Unifrog or Informed Choices (by Russell Group universities) for guidance on making the right choices for your future.

How to Find & Secure Work Experience

Experience the Future: Work Experience Opens Doors!

Work experience is more than just a CV booster – it’s your chance to explore different careers, gain real-world skills, and build confidence. Whether it's a short placement or shadowing, work experience helps you connect classroom learning to the professional world. It shows future employers and universities that you’re proactive, adaptable, and ready for the challenges ahead. Don’t miss out on the chance to discover what excites you and sharpen the skills that will shape your future!

The following examples show that gaining work experience doesn’t always have to be a traditional job – there are plenty of ways to get involved, explore your passions, and build your skill set!

  • Interested in Law? Visit the public gallery in your local court to observe real cases and get a feel for how lawyers and judges operate in the legal system.

  • Thinking About Medicine? Volunteer at a care home, hospice, or hospital to gain experience interacting with patients, learning about care settings, and understanding healthcare environments.

  • Keen on Politics? Attend a local council meeting or even schedule a visit to Parliament to see democracy in action and learn how public policies are made.

  • Curious About Journalism? Offer to write for a local magazine, school newspaper, or blog to build your portfolio and get a taste of what it’s like to work under deadlines.

  • Passionate About Teaching? Reach out to your local primary school and ask if you can help with after-school clubs or tutor younger students, gaining experience in education.

Gap Year: A World of Opportunities Awaits – Discover, Grow, and Gain Real-World Experience!

Gap Year: Pros & Cons

Taking a gap year can be an exciting way to explore the world, develop new skills, and gain valuable life experience before diving into further education or your career. However, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons before making your decision.

Pros:

  • Personal Growth: A gap year gives you time to mature, develop independence, and gain confidence through new experiences.
  • Work Experience: You can gain practical experience through internships, volunteering, or part-time work, boosting your CV.
  • Travel Opportunities: Explore different cultures, learn new languages, and broaden your worldview.
  • Clarify Career Goals: A break from formal education can help you reflect on your long-term goals and choose the right path for you.
  • Financial Preparation: Taking a year to work and save money can help you afford future tuition or travel expenses.

Cons:

  • Loss of Academic Momentum: A year away from education might make it harder to get back into study routines.
  • Costs: Travel, accommodation, and other expenses can add up, especially if you don’t work during your gap year.
  • Unstructured Time: Without a clear plan, a gap year can turn into a wasted opportunity with little personal or professional growth.
  • Risks of Changing Goals: A year off might shift your priorities, leading to a change in educational or career goals, which could require adjustments later.

Top 5 Things to Consider When Planning a Gap Year:

  1. Purpose: Why are you taking a gap year? Set clear goals—whether it’s travel, work experience, or volunteering—so your time is productive and purposeful.

  2. Budget: Calculate how much money you’ll need, both for travel and living expenses, and how you’ll fund it. Consider working part of the year to cover costs.

  3. Opportunities: Research gap year programs, internships, volunteer work, or part-time jobs that align with your interests. Choose activities that will add value to your CV or personal growth.

  4. Practical Preparation: Make sure you’re well-prepared by sorting out important details like travel insurance, visas, accommodation, and health precautions.

  5. Future Plans: Keep an eye on deadlines for university applications, apprenticeships, or jobs. A gap year can enhance your future prospects if managed well, so stay focused on your next steps.

A gap year can be an enriching experience if you plan it right. Be intentional, stay organised, and make the most of this unique opportunity!
