Born and raised to Cuban immigrants, Alex Meruelo grew up in Los Angeles with a passion for business. His career as an entrepreneur began when he established the popular chain La Pizza Loca in 1985. Today, Mr. Meruelo and his family own and operate businesses in multiple sectors including entertainment, media, gaming and hospitality, construction, sports, real estate, banking, and food services.

The Meruelo family is focused on philanthropic efforts improving education and working to bridge the gap of inequality and empower those from underrepresented backgrounds. The Meruelos donated $25,000 to the Epicurean Charitable Foundation, along with hosting ECF student interns at SAHARA Las Vegas.

Epicurean Charitable Foundation of Las Vegas (ECF) is a nonprofit organization comprised of 25 leading hospitality and food and beverage executives in the city, dedicated to empowering the future leaders of the industry and giving back to their community.

• ECF provides scholarships of up to $35,000 for students attending UNLV, awarding over $2.2 million in scholarship monies the last 18 years.

• ECF students are mentored to succeed through comprehensive work force development programs, unique one-on-one mentoring, networking opportunities, leadership guidance, and etiquette development.

• Nearly all ECF students are first generation college students.

• ECF proudly partners with local organizations including Dress for Success, Tiger Todd HERO Foundation, Cultural Diversity Foundation, Public Education Foundation, Las Vegas Motor Speedway Children’s Charities, and UNLV’s Student Support Services.

• Currently all ECF students attend UNLV.

• All ECF students volunteer at least 60 hours per year.

• In recent year, ECF has grown our graduation rate to 85%!

• ECF’s incoming freshman class has an outstanding 3.98GPA.

• SAHARA Las Vegas recently brought 4 ECF students in as interns and donated $25,000 to scholarships!
