It is certainly not the case where I am, and the forecast isn’t looking flash. Despite this, both NSW and Queensland representatives from the rescue services have issued an appeal for boaties to do the right thing on the water. From Queensland, the message from Water Police is urging Far Northerners to ensure their boats are properly maintained, following multiple incidents over the past few days. In NSW, Marine Rescue urges boaters to plan, prepare, and be vigilant on the water. Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Alex Barrell said if conditions allow, he expects large numbers of boaters to hit the water over the long weekend. He says that more than 3,400 Marine Rescue volunteers are ready to respond to boaters needing assistance across the state this King’s Birthday long weekend. For some of us, this is a long weekend, with King’s Birthday celebrations in NSW, Victoria, SA, ACT, NT, and Tassie. The weather is not the only thing we will be watching. The BIA has challenged the authorities about the upcoming price increases to boat licence fees. The greatest sore point is with PWC licences, where increases of up to 88 percent are planned, meaning a 10-year licence fee will be almost $2000.
