Thursday Edition
Well, hello there, members! Welcome to another fantastic Thursday. How are you all doing today? I (Vella) am getting as many things as possible done this week because I know the upcoming holidays will be very busy with preparations and celebrations! You know what would be incredible though? If we could all meet for one giant SDC Christmas party. We would have to hire the biggest stadium in Australia, which (fun fact) is actually the MCG and even then, we would only fit half of you in it! How crazy is that? The MCG can only hold up to 100,000 people, and we have 200,000 members. We’d have to spread the party across two nights, one night for the first lot of you and the next night for the final lot! But we wouldn’t mind, two nights of partying with you lot sounds like an absolute hoot! 😉
Anyway, maybe one day but for now, back to our newsletter. First things first, it’s time to give you all the answer to yesterday’s tricky riddle. For those of you who don’t remember, the riddle goes:
Why is Santa really good at Karate?
Well? That’s because he has a black belt! Haha, did you get it? A few of you did! Well, you know what that means, right? You get a shout-out! So stick around, and you’ll find a shout-out waiting for you at the end of the newsletter. We also had an adorable answer from member @Jan FWF which we think deserves a shout-out. They said Santa wants to look fit and healthy for the kids and the elderly. Aww!
Next on the agenda for today, it’s time to share a Fascinating Fact!
You've likely heard songs about kissing under the mistletoe during Christmas. But did you know that mistletoe isn’t as romantic as you think? In old English, the word 'mistletoe' actually means 'dung twig' because the plant was seen as a pest and can be spread through birds’ feces! Now, that’s not very romantic, is it?
Now then, members, what’s happening in Australia and around the world today?

Today’s Yesterday’s Australia segment is thanks to member @Judibing. ‘I remember Christmas morning in 1944 or 45. When I opened my eyes, at the bottom of the bed was a shiny 3-wheel bike. Because it was wartime, my dad had made it for me. He was an aircraft engineer and a fitter and turner during the day and an air raid warden through the nights. When he had found time to make this, goodness knows! Also, a pillowcase was hanging on the bottom of the bed. It contained a beautiful doll, books and an orange.’
Awww, what a beautiful memory! It’s remarkable how despite the difficulties of wartime, your father managed to surprise you on Christmas morning. It’s moments like these that make the biggest impact and leave a lasting memory. Thank you, @Judibing, for sharing this story with us.
