In our last two newsletters we mentioned new guidance from Privacy Commissioner Michael Webster that will help people working in the children’s sector understand what information can be shared to keep tamariki and rangatahi safe.
Information can also be shared to protect the wellbeing of a child. Poor information sharing is an issue we hear about a lot on our monitoring visits, whether it is between people who work with tamariki and rangatahi or between Oranga Tamariki and caregivers.
The Privacy Commission has developed and published two scenarios about information sharing with caregivers to help guide practice.
Sharing health information with caregivers https://www.privacy.org.nz/resources-and-learning/a-z-topics/information-sharing-childrens-wellbeing-and-safety/oranga-tamariki-act-1989/#health-info-child
Sharing All About Me plans with caregivers https://www.privacy.org.nz/resources-and-learning/a-z-topics/information-sharing-childrens-wellbeing-and-safety/oranga-tamariki-act-1989/#all-about-me
You can find lots more examples of information sharing under the Oranga Tamariki Act on this page: https://www.privacy.org.nz/resources-and-learning/a-z-topics/information-sharing-childrens-wellbeing-and-safety/oranga-tamariki-act-1989/
