Hi Friend,
You just bought the backpack, the shoes, the whole list. Your kid is excited, bouncing around the kitchen, ready to go. Posture is probably the last thing on your mind right now, and honestly, that makes sense.
Here's the thing I notice every August. After a summer of running around outside, kids suddenly go back to sitting most of the day, hauling a loaded pack, and hunching over a new desk. Growing spines adapt fast, which is good, but that also means they pick up new patterns fast, for better or worse.
- A heavy pack teaches a kid to lean
When a backpack is too heavy, a kid leans forward or arches back to carry it. Do that every morning and the body learns the lean as normal.
Try this: Pack it and weigh it. A loaded pack shouldn't be more than about a tenth of your kid's body weight. Move the heavy books closest to the back and use both shoulder straps, always.
- Summer moved a lot. School sits a lot.
The switch from all-day movement to all-day sitting is a big shift for a growing body. That reset is happening this exact week.
Try this: Ask what they do at recess and after school. Protect the movement they still get, and get them up and moving for a bit before homework instead of straight from desk to desk.
- Kids rarely say it hurts, so watch instead
Kids don't usually complain about posture. They just adjust around it, and you notice it in how they stand or carry the bag.
Try this: Watch from behind as they walk to the car with the pack on. One shoulder riding higher, a lean, or a slump is worth noting so you can mention it.
What This Means for You
| ✔ | A growing spine adapts fast, which is exactly why this week matters. |
| ✔ | If you spot a lean or an uneven shoulder, jot it down to bring in. |
| ✔ | A quick check now is easier than untangling a habit later. |
| ✔ | Bring your kid in and we'll take a look before the pattern settles in. |
