Policy staff from each organization spoke about the current status of research funding and key health agencies, as well as the implications of the recent budget reconciliation bill. FDA Approves First Oral Therapy for Advanced HER2+ NSCLCOn August 8, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted accelerated approval to zongertinib, the first oral targeted therapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with HER2 mutations. These mutations, found in about 2–3% of nonsquamous NSCLCs, are known to drive tumor growth. Learn more about this new treatment option. RESEARCH CORNERResearch drives progress—and saves lives. As new questions emerge about lung cancer, researchers rise to meet them—uncovering the biology behind the disease and developing critical therapies that offer patients more time and better outcomes. Their discoveries are transforming what it means to live with lung cancer. ![]() But the work is far from over. Continued research, with the support of the lung cancer community, is essential to ensure that every patient has access to better options and new hope. Why Do People Without Significant Tobacco Exposure Get Lung Cancer?As tobacco use has declined in recent years, we have seen a new demographic of patients with lung cancer emerge. Lung cancer in individuals without tobacco exposure (also called lung cancer in never-smokers or LCINS) is becoming more common. Researchers have uncovered some potential risk factors such as genetics and environmental exposure. In addition, they are exploring methods for early detection and targeted treatment. Learn more about this important research with Jaclyn LoPiccolo, MD, PhD, of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
