Banning ChatGPT in Elementary Schools: A Conversation That Can No Longer Be Ignored
The recent and viral national debate about ChatGPT in education prompted Career Choices author, Mindy Bingham, to weigh in on the potential harm to elementary school children. What prompted her to jump into this critical conversation is Academic Innovations’ mantra, "Doing what’s best for students."

Mindy Bingham stated, “We don't have time to sleepwalk through this one. The genie is out of the bottle. As educators and parents, I recommend caution by not jumping on this newest technology bandwagon, at least until research shows us the positives and negatives.”
A young mind is a precious thing, and it is vital that all necessary precautions are taken to protect it. “Let us prioritize brain power over digital power and use technology only as a means to support and enhance learning, not replace it,” said Bingham.
She also suggested six actions parents and educators can take right now as this technology emerges.
Career & Education Plans Give Students “Drive” at Cabrillo High School
“Students at Cabrillo High School who take the 10-year planning process seriously have more confidence and take more initiative in their education,” said David Riley, a teacher at Cabrillo High School (2022 Career Choices Medal Winner).
“The kids who have the buy-in—you can see that they go ‘Ok, I have an internship this summer’ or ‘I have a job,’” Riley said. “They’re coming back and asking questions because I can see that they want to do better with their life. They have a drive, and you can see that drive.”
