Changes to customer work To make sure we’re ready to help customers electrify, we're moving to a new way of managing our customer delivery services (also known as customer-initiated works or CIW) on our network. When this change comes into effect from mid-2025, customers will work directly with us, rather than a Powerco-approved contractor. What's happening in Taranaki? Work’s begun on a significant upgrade to the electricity network in Tikorangi, North Taranaki, to ensure customers in Waitara and surrounding areas have reliable electricity now and into the future, and to support growth of the area. What's happening in Manawatū? A $10m electricity upgrade project is underway in Marton and is expected to be completed by June 2025. A new switchroom is being built at the Pukepapa Road Substation and new cables are being undergrounded from the Arahina Substation on Mill Street to the Pukepapa Road Substation in Marton. The upgrade to the Feilding Substation is also nearing completion. What's happening in Wairarapa? We've created new website pages to act as a one stop shop for customers in Tīnui East Coast and Ākitio to get updates about the work we’re doing to improve the reliability and quality of power supply in these areas. What's happening in Wellington? Our gas network in Wellington has undergone an important upgrade with the installation of replacement valves at the Belmont Gas Gate. The gate plays a crucial role in the Hutt Valley gas network, regulating the gas pressure and supplying approximately 27,000 customers. The Belmont Gas Gate lets us independently turn off the Riddlers and Avalon district regulator stations in the case of an emergency. What's happening in Whanganui? The Whanganui awa is going to be home to one of Powerco’s first PowerHubs to support community energy resilience in the face of frequent or long power outages. Read more about how the PowerHubs will help people stay connected and access power as a community, independently of the main power grid. Artwork on assets in Te Puke Check out the mural by artist Sarah Kolver on the outside of our Atuaroa Avenue substation in Te Puke, brightening up the view from the adjacent sports field. We enjoyed going door to door, canvassing neighbours’ views on which of the two nature-inspired designs they would prefer. Fibre rolling out to Coromandel Find out more about our project to install a 164km fibre optic cable on the Coromandel Peninsula and what it means for customers in the region. Thousands of trees planted in Putāruru More than 10,000 trees have been planted in the Duxfield Reserve, Putāruru, in a planting project that started in 2022. The project was led by the Pokaiwhenua Catchment Group to improve the water quality and biodiversity along the stream. Meet new Forestry Manager Nick Catton With the growth in forestry and increased carbon planting across New Zealand, new Forestry Manager Nick Catton has joined the team to work proactively with forestry owners and managers. With fallen trees and branches responsible for around a quarter of all outages, Nick is keen to use his experience as a utilities arborist and machine operator in the forestry industry to help forestry owners keep their costs and risks to a minimum while minimising faults to our network.
