Review: Heiresses by Laura ThompsonHeiresses is a new release non-fiction eAudiobook title that focusses on the dramatic, salacious, often traumatic lives of British and American heiresses through history, from the 17th century to the 1950s. Several heiresses, including American Jennie Jerome (Winston Churchill's mother), the Mitford sisters (politically fractious 1930s It Girls), and Barbara Hutton (Woolworths heiress who had seven husbands) are used as examples to show money doesn't necessarily lead to happiness. In fact, it often left these excessively wealthy women in gilded cages, trapped by their money and status. Thompson creates a fabulously immersive world to show the internal lives of these 'million dollar babies', and creates a space for readers to question if wealth really is worth it. It follows the relationship of Tom and Patrick in 1950s Brighton, at a time when homosexuality was illegal in England. The story is told from the perspective of Tom's wife, Marion, whom he married to maintain his safe life and his position as a police officer. The novel is also told partly from the perspective of Patrick. The dual perspectives of Patrick and Marian give an insight into both of their relationships with Tom. The narrative frequently flashes forward to 1999, where we see how the decisions of each character has impacted their lives. This is a story about regret, unrequited love, and the horrific impacts of love being illegal. It includes immersive descriptions that gives the reader a sense of walking around Brighton in the 1950s. The facts presented are fun, interesting and easy for kids to understand, but it's the amazing illustrations that really make this book shine. Hand drawn by Snaith, the artwork is colourful, detailed and … hilarious! She’s been arrested twice and married four times. But the descriptor she appears most proud of is matchmaker. “I suppose I really am that,” she muses with obvious delight. “Yes, I match humans with books.” A must read if you enjoy a good memoir about survival against life's cruelties. It's rewarding work… until one day it is no longer enough. Dex sets off into the wilderness, hoping to find their lost spark, and along the way they meet Mosscap, the first robot to interact with humans in centuries. Mosscap's quest is simple enough: to learn what humans need. Unfortunately, that's exactly what Dex is already struggling with. Dedicated to ‘anybody who could use a break’, Becky Chambers’ A Psalm for the Wild-Built is an achingly soft exploration of identity and purpose in a wistful solarpunk setting. Best enjoyed with an open heart... and a cup of tea.
