From Struggle to Strength: Julie’s Journey from Personal Battles to Community Hero

After struggling with depression and alcohol dependency for several years, Julie began attending a local art group after being encouraged by a volunteer she met via social media. She felt encouraged to join more community groups following this and made friends by accessing Stockport Homes’ pantry service. Julie continued to get involved, joining the committee for Brinnington Big Local and becoming a volunteer at the pantry, saying she ‘wanted to pay back the kindness and support I was shown at the lowest part of my life.’

Julie has developed her self-confidence to ensure she can help others by courageously sharing her own story. She set up ‘Chatty Crafters’, a women’s only group where participants meet weekly to craft, have a coffee, and talk through anything they are dealing with in their personal lives - you can find out more here. But that isn’t all; Julie has been involved with many other community initiatives, from designing and delivering a range of well-being sessions for women who have experienced domestic abuse, to setting up a kids’ gardening club, she truly goes above and beyond for her community. Her work is not limited to Stockport; Julie has travelled across Greater Manchester, encouraging other communities to set up community gardens, improve their well-being, and help individuals escape domestic abuse.

“It was not all plain sailing as it took a lot of courage to take those first steps but I do not regret a single moment on my journey and this helps me every day to empathise with those going through difficult times in their lives,” said Julie. “What motivates me and is my main goal is to help people. If I can help someone smile again I will do anything and everything I can to do that.” - Julie Loftus.
