Livestock Water Quality Testing
BC Cattlemen's Association has partnered with the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food to initiate a Livestock Water Quality Testing Pilot Project. This project will serve as a proactive way for producers to test their water and mitigate potential losses. Why it was developed: Severe drought and dry weather conditions can negatively impact the quality of livestock drinking water and have serious implications on animal health and reproduction.
Impacts from poor water quality are often discovered after animals have suddenly become ill or a group of susceptible animals, such as calves, die. Reminders: - Thoroughly clean a 1 litre bottle to collect your sample in
- Be sure the bottle is full
- You may submit multiple samples to be conductivity tested
- Be sure to know the source type - ground or surface water
- Take a photo with your phone of the id sheet you filled
out with the sample to have a record

Protein Industries Canada Launches Asia-Pacific Market Entry Program
The Asia-Pacific Market Entry Program brings together Canada’s potential to be a global leader in the plant-based market and Singapore’s growing demand for a sustainable, nutritious food supply. Developed and run in partnership with Nurasa Food Tech Innovation Centre, a leading food innovation centre based in Singapore, this program is designed to help Canada’s plant-based food and ingredient companies optimize their products for launch in the Asia-Pacific market.
The Asia-Pacific Market Entry Program is currently open to applications until Oct. 15, 2025. Program participants can receive reimbursement for up to 75% of project costs.
Insurance and Income Protection Programs are an important part of a farmer’s overall risk management strategy. AgriStability and Production Insurance work together to provide the best coverage for producers.
Production Insurance helps producers manage their risk of crop losses caused by hail, spring frost, excessive rain, drought, flooding and other extreme weather events. In British Columbia, Production Insurance is available for:

Success Story: TF Cattle Co Transforms Farm Land
Sean Swoboda and his team at TF Cattle Company recently experienced a remarkable transformation in their farming practices thanks to the Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) program. With the guidance of their EFP Advisor, they identified key environmental risks and took proactive steps to enhance their operations. Thanks to the Beneficial Management Practices Program (BMP), they invested in a state-of-the-art no-till seed drill, transforming their farming approach. The benefits? Reduced tilling hours, significant fuel savings, and improved soil health! Sean shared, "[Funding] made it possible to buy a no-till seed drill. The time saved planting was even more than anticipated!" Farmers who have an Environmental Farm Plan
(EFP) learn how to reduce agriculture’s impact on the environment. Many Environmental Farm Plan participants enjoy increased efficiency, profitability, and new customers as a result of increased environmental sustainability. (Ministry of Agriculture and Food)
EFP Program Funding has been provided by the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a $3.5 billion, 5-year agreement between the federal, provincial and territorial governments. Additional funding has been provided by CleanBC. The program is delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of B.C. (IAF).
Yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus) is commonly sold as a garden ornamental with its appealing yellow flowers that require no maintenance. What garden enthusiasts might not know is that yellow flag iris is an invasive species that requires extensive knowledge, specialized tools, and time to remove once established. Additionally post management monitoring of the area is a must to ensure that this iris does not come back. This aquatic iris is known to be resilient and spreads via seed dispersal and rhizome fragments that can form new plants. Management involves removing as much of the plant and root system as possible and covering the disturbed soil with a weighted tarp for at least a year. This prolonged period without sunlight causes the remaining roots to decompose, making them unviable. This species is a major concern for several
reasons. It forms dense mats wherever it invades and its seeds, which are contained in small green banana shaped floating pods, easily spread to new areas through the movement of water. Much like other invasive aquatic plants, yellow flag iris damages wildlife habitat, reduces water flow, and outcompetes native vegetation. It can also be toxic for animal and human consumption and cause skin irritation if handled without proper safety precautions. We encourage everyone to be PlantWise when purchasing any plant for their garden or backyard pond. A quick google search is all you need to learn whether the plant you are planning to buy
is an invasive species or non-invasive species. Together we can help prevent plants like yellow flag iris from continuing to spread across the Cariboo.

The 2026 Census of Agriculture
The questionnaire for the 2026 Census of Agriculture has been published on the Statistics Canada website. New categories have been added to the commodity questions in the 2026 Census to identify emerging agricultural products. Questions on agricultural practices have been expanded to measure the breadth of environmental practices and environmental sustainability in the agricultural sector. Questions on the adoption of on-farm technologies and renewable energy production were updated with new or modified categories to better reflect current technologies.
