Three Ways to Help Teens Believe in a Hopeful Future

“I believe in hope. I believe in belief.” Yes, we just quoted Ted Lasso. Regardless of whether or not you’ve seen the Emmy-winning show, that message resonates with everyone. As back-to-school inches closer, it’s important to determine how we help students find and believe in hope in order to start the year off strong.
Below are three steps to give them opportunities to rethink their future goals and lifestyle expectations by engaging them in the process of envisioning a hopeful future.
First: Elevate Time-Honored Messages
Through intentional conversations, and by setting your own lived-out examples, remind kids:
✓ This too shall pass
✓ Happiness requires action
✓ Keep calm and carry on
Next: Replace Negative Messages with Empowering Ones
✓ Drop uplifting notes
✓ Prioritize social and emotional learning
✓ Practice articulating positive affirmations that support envisioned goals
Making the classroom an area they feel safe and comfortable in will enhance their learning experience.
Lastly: Ensure Teens Have Opportunities to Become Self-Aware
At this stage in their psychological and emotional development, adolescents should be forming their identity by answering the three key questions outlined in the Career Choices series:
1. Who am I?
2. What do I want?
3. How do I get it?
