School Spotlight: OIC Wilson Helps Students Explore Careers Through Community Partnerships

OIC Wilson Program Coordinator, Marvin Dew, experienced first-hand the impact and importance of having community partnerships to pair with their Career Choices and Changes course.

"[Some students] wanted to work in the medical field because their mom did, but after interacting with a lot of EMTs and hearing from our partners, they learned more about different aspects of the field. The EMTs came in, did the CPR demonstration, and explained what they do. Then, they showed how they insert a tracheal tube. After that, three of the girls said, 'Oh, I’m done. I’m going to pursue computer graphics instead.'"

Bringing community partners together to assist students in evaluating their 10-Year Plan and discuss details of different careers increasingly helps students to make informed career decisions.

By keeping their plan easily accessible, students will have a constant reminder as they navigate through their decade of transition—from high school to post-secondary education or training, and eventually into the workforce—empowering them to continue the goal-setting and decision-making process they learned in their Career Choices series course.
