In addition to this, Banducci will introduce some examples of published research and discuss strategies on how to add value to and gain new insight from these rich data sources.

ESRC Student Survey 2021

Thank you for your participation.

Calling all budding event organisers!

Fancy developing your skills as a conference planner? Hungry to share your event curating skills? Then the SWDTP 2021 conference committee is for you!

Every year the SWDTP runs a conference, organised by PGRs for PGRs. After last year’s fantastic online event, we’ve been given permission to organise this year’s conference IN REAL LIFE. The 2021 conference will be a very special event, as it will celebrate 10 years of the SWDTC/P funding and supporting PhDs in the social sciences.

This year’s conference will be held in November, in Bristol. We are seeking to recruit volunteers from across the SWDTP to help with developing the conference programme, liaising with speakers, marketing, and assisting with running the event.

If you are interested in helping to organise this year’s conference, please contact Molly Conisbee for more details. Our first conference committee meeting will be on 13 July, 13:00-15:00 at 1 Priory Road (SWDTP hub), or via Zoom.

Wanted! Student reps for UWE and Plymouth

The SWDTP is looking for PGRs from Plymouth and UWE to join our student reps group.

Student reps meet around four times a year with the SWDTP hub team to discuss any issues (big or small) raised by their colleagues at their home institution. Two reps also attend the Academic Advisory Board (AAB) to join strategic discussions about the SWDTP and represent PGR views.

The reps group is your chance to get PGR voices heard! If you would like to find out more, please contact Molly Conisbee.

Three Minute Thesis competition

The winner of the University of Bath’s 3MT® final this year was ESRC funded Mike Richardson, Department of Psychology, SWDTP with his presentation 'Seeing with the tongue’. Mike earns a commemorative plate and a place in the 3MT® UK semi-final which will be held in July.

Mike said: "The experience was awesome, such a nice way to take a step back and think about what makes our research appealing to the public, which is why most of our research takes place anyway! I particularly liked getting feedback from a variety of people during the process, which helped to tailor the presentation to suit a wider audience."

Huge congratulations to Mike and our very best wishes for the UK semi-final in July!

Doctoral Recognition Award

Two ESRC funded students were amongst the winners of the Doctoral Recognition Student Award 2020/21 at Bath.

This award recognises students who have contributed to enhancing the doctoral student experience.

You can find out more about the event here

Congratulations to:

Katy Brown, Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies, SWDTP

Covid-19 Update

The South West Doctoral Training Partnership is very aware of the impact Covid-19, home-working, cancelled fieldwork and often caring responsibilities are having upon your studies, and on your well-being

24th March 2021: The UKRI has updated its rules around eligibility for funded PhD extensions. Their announcement can be viewed here. It permits, in exceptional circumstances, further requests from students who had an earlier request turned down or who have already received an extension under phase one or phase two.

22nd February 2021: The UKRI has issued an open letter detailing its updated extensions policy. This can be read here.

26th February 2021: The SWDTP held a town hall session to listen to students’ concerns and, wherever possible, provide answers about the SWDTP, Covid-19 extensions, and other wider ranging concerns. From this we have produced a ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ Document which you can click here to read.

For a more complete timeline, including previous announcements, please see our Covid-19 information page
