No images? Click here In D.C., Keshet convened a Jewish caucus of LGBTQ+ Jewish advocates, educators, healthcare providers, and community members. Through speed-friending, shared learning, and strategizing, we deepened relationships with long-time partners and welcomed people who are new to LGBTQ+ advocacy. RIGHT: Jon Cohen and David Weitzman met a college student from Florida who was so moved by the experience in D.C. that he joined Keshet days later in Florida for Pride at the Capitol—his first time advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, and doing so proudly as a Jew.
Along with our interfaith partner organizations, Keshet facilitated an advocacy training and coordinated office visits to 31 legislators. Lanie Cohen trained advocates to share their stories with elected officials, amplifying the real-world impact of anti-LGBTQ+—and especially anti-trans—legislation. LEFT: As we moved through the halls of Congress, buoyed by feelings of community and grounded in Jewish values and moral clarity, we named ourselves Team Queer Joy. RIGHT: Keshet led a Shabbat service for Jewish conference attendees and participants from all faith (or no faith!) backgrounds. Sitting in a circle in a dimly lit room, guided by Rachel Gollay, Rabbi Eliana Kayelle, and Rabbi Micah Buck, as well as our partner Rose Kantorczyk from SOJOURN, we sang both traditional prayers and new ones by queer and trans Jews. In song and silence, we felt the power of showing up fully as our queer Jewish selves.
Our presence at Creating Change—as LGBTQ+ people, as Jews, and as Jewish LGBTQ+ leaders—mattered. It nourished and strengthened us, and it nourished and strengthened many others in our movement. We will continue to bring our queerness and Jewishness to the table, and create space for others to do the same, in our communities, our movements, our states, and our country. In strength,
Jon Cohen
