Webinar: Protecting Water Quality in Livestock Water Systems
When: April 8, 2026 from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM (PT)
Where: Microsoft Teams Hosted by the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association This session will focus on key considerations for dugouts and wells, including how spring runoff and early-season conditions can affect water quality. Participants will learn about common water quality challenges in livestock water systems and best management practices (BMPs) that help maintain safe and reliable water sources. The webinar will also highlight practical things producers can check or assess before livestock are moved to pasture, along with common issues producers encounter with livestock water systems.
Documentary Viewing Event:
"Tea Creek"
When: April 14, 2026, at 6:30 PM (PT) Where: The Lido Theater, Fort St. John, B.C.
The Peace Region Farmers Institute Food Hub is proud to present the documentary film "Tea Creek". The film is a heartfelt and visually rich documentary set on a 140-acre farm in Kitwanga, British Columbia, where Indigenous food sovereignty activist Jacob Beaton has turned a humble family homestead into a thriving training centre. The film follows Jacob and his team through a full growing season as they cultivate thousands of pounds of produce, teach land-based food skills, and build space for healing and cultural renewal. By weaving individual journeys with the broader history of Indigenous resilience,
the film offers a powerful and uplifting portrait of how Indigenous food sovereignty can be a path toward cultural regeneration and collective empowerment. The event will include an appetizer spread made with locally produced ingredients and a Q&A with film participants (including director Ryan Dickie, a member of Fort Nelson First Nation) after the screening.
When: April 15, 2026, from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM (PT)
Where: Zoom Hosted by Alberta Agrisystems Living Lab. Beavers are a keystone species that create riparian habitat and influence the ecosystem functions these areas provide. This presentation will offer an overview of beaver biology, ecology, and behaviour. It will also touch on challenges when their behaviour or actions conflicts with those of humans and discuss some of the options available for addressing these challenges while still maintaining the benefits of the habitats they create.
Webinar: Measuring Methane Emissions from Feedlots Using UAVs Webinar
When: April 22, 2026, from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM (PT)
Where: Zoom Hosted by Alberta Agrisystems Living Lab. Methane emissions are an increasing focus for the livestock industry, but measuring them accurately under real feedlot conditions remains a challenge. This talk will highlight how uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs, or drones) are being used to measure methane emissions directly from feedlots. We’ll walk through how the technology works, what it can reveal about emission patterns, and how these measurements compare to traditional approaches. The presentation will focus on practical insights, current limitations, and what this type of data could mean for producers as the industry moves toward improved efficiency, transparency, and sustainability.
When: April 29, 2026 from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM (PT)
Where: Zoom Hosted by Alberta Agisystems Living Lab. Join to learn more about composting. we'll gather knowledge on past and current composting research including the concept of composting, optimal conditions for composting procedures, application of composting for the disposal of livestock manure and carcasses, examining the compost/manure fertilizer values as soil amendment for crop production and increase soil health, and co-benefits of using composting for manure disposal including inactivating pathogens such as infectious prions and reducing the antimicrobial residues and spread of antimicrobial resistance genes into environment.

Early-Season Drought Preparedness Tips and Resources
The March 1st snow conditions and water supply bulletin reports that the provincial mountain snowpack is slightly below normal across B.C. (averaging 91% of normal), though considerably higher than at this same time last year. While it is still too early to tell what this season will bring, now is a great time to start thinking about how your farm can best prepare and adapt to changing drought conditions. Resources to prepare for drought: - Visit our Drought in Agriculture webpage for current information, resources and tools, including the Quick Guide to drought resources, water management. considerations, soil and crop management tips, livestock considerations, tools for agricultural irrigation scheduling, calculating water needs and accessing current weather data, and links to relevant programs and financial supports.
