Career: Congratulations Akshay Tyagi (BFA 2008) who was recently became the Creative Director for South Asian Fashion Week 2025, happening in New York Feb. 7-16, 2025! The renowned celebrity stylist, is known for curating iconic looks for A-list celebrities, high-profile fashion events, magazines and film. Their influence will be pivotal in shaping SAFW’s campaigns, photoshoots, and event production, setting new standards for South Asian fashion on the world stage. Read more here. Awards: Congratulations to siblings Chloé Gordon (BFA 2010) and Parris Morris (BFA 2011). Their fashion brand Beaufille was named Womenswear Designer of the Year at The Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards in October. In this episode, Amiri shares her remarkable journey from painting to textiles, drawing deeply from her Afghan heritage and personal history. Competition: Congratulations to Nick Rosin (BFA 2014) who was recently selected to participate in TALENTE - Masters of the Future 2025 Exhibition that will be shown during Munich Jewellery week in March 2025. Acquisition: Congratulations to Rilla Marshall (BFA 2004), whose woven series Weighted Lines was purchased by Global Affairs Canada for its visual art collection. The art is on its way to the Canadian Ambassador's office in Dhaka, Bangladesh. See more here. Residency: Congratulations to Alice Banks (MFA 2023) who is currently the artist-in-residence at the Molokai Arts Center. The purpose of the MAC Artist in Residence program is to provide artists with a respite from daily responsibilities, to enable them to create and concentrate on their work. "I will focus on completing a print series using watercolour monoprints and appliquéd quilts. Conceptually I will look at multigenerational communication beyond the family, from community, culture, to nature." Read more here. Sow to Sew Speakers’ Series: Visiting artist and fashion designer, Lee Dekel (2012) will do a talk Nov. 21 to share how she set up her internationally recognized label, while operating a sustainable business. Dekel is founder of 100% Silk, a clothing line, boutique and gallery in downtown Toronto, known for its dedication to exalted textiles and rich textures. Speakers' Series presents a conversation between artist Brigitta Zhao (MFA 2024) and PhD candidate Imogen Clendinning. Zhao works closely with ocean scientists and marine data to create digital art featured on social media and in public installations. Benton's collection seeks to immortalize the familiar sights of gulls, cormorants and song birds in beautiful art pieces, as well as the magical encounters with porpoises, orcas, and belugas that have left a lasting impression on the artist's being. Exhibition: Instant Decay, a solo exhibition of new work by Charles Bishop (1975 - 1977) consisting of a series photographic prints on archival watercolour paper. With a career spanning over three decades, Kenyan contemporary artist Mary Ogembo was an influential figure in the Kenyan art scene, creating works rich in colour and symbolism that highlighted the resilience, beauty, and empowerment of African women. Ogembo pursued her dream of returning to school and she chose NSCAD to broaden her artistic horizons. She graduated in May with her Bachelor of Fine Arts, a testament to her insatiable curiosity and lifelong commitment to growth. Read more here. The Trust supports emerging artists and talents in Nova Scotia with scholarships and bursaries to further studies and research in their respective fields.
