Why you're probably better at networking than you realise...and why it matters.

Networking: Why you're better at it than you probably realise

We're mammals. We're hardwired to connect. Even artists (like you) who might like to spend time creating in solitude.

Experiencing a sense of belonging is important for wellbeing.

A sense of community doesn't have to mean geographic community, it can mean a community of shared interest. Such as a community of artists or a community of arts lovers.

True belonging isn't the same as 'fitting in'. True belonging means you can be your whole self. Your unique self. It means being who you are, not who you think you have to be.

A healthy community is one in which everyone can be themselves, everyone matters and everyone can contribute. This is the kind of creative and cultural community Southern Forest Arts would like to help foster in the local region.

Networking events like this Friday's gathering in Nannup are one of the ways we hope to facilitate connection and sharing.

Business cards aren't needed. Nor elevator pitches or impressive CVs. Just bring your whole SELF. Let's listen and learn and grow something beautiful together.

[The networking session is really just a series of small informal chats between people who like you, love creativity, and ....there will be cake!]

Have you heard about the potential issue of invalidated home insurance for artists working from home?

Lead national arts org calling for changes to Home Insurance cover

The National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) joins the call for change to home and contents insurance policies to extend cover for small businesses working from home. Numerous artists have raised concerns following an ABC investigation earlier this month which revealed home insurance policies may be void where ABNs are registered at the home address.

“NAVA has received a spike in distressed calls from artists over the last week following recent media reports about the voiding of general home and contents insurances for individuals who run a ‘home-based’ business,” said Penelope Benton, Executive Director.

“A great number of artists produce artwork in their bedrooms, at the dining table or in their backyards. As some of the lowest paid professionals in Australia, many artists cannot afford an offsite studio to produce their work.”

“Numerous studio programs operate on a short-term basis, between a few months to a few years. It is rare for an artist to secure a permanent or long-term studio in an offsite location. This means artists who are not working from home are also still likely to have their ABNs registered to their home address.”

“The impacts of recent floods, as well as the ongoing pandemic, has meant that more artists have had to close their studios and set up their practice at home. The uncovering of this insurance issue has a huge impact on artists.”

“NAVA are receiving lots of emails and phone calls from concerned artists asking for clarity on what they should be looking at or confirming with their home and contents insurance policies if they are working on their practice from home.”

“Whether an artist’s home and contents insurance policy is voided by making artwork at home is contingent on their actual policy. There isn't a one-size-fits-all here. NAVA's advice is to read the Product Disclosure Statement. If you are unsure about anything, you should call your insurer.”

Does this worry you?

Would you like SFA to advocate on this issue?

Bunbury Biennale

Call for artist expressions of interest

The theme for the 2023 Bunbury Biennale is Culture / Nature.
Sweeping shifts in our environment, often the result of human activities, are disrupting norms around the world.  Civilization as we know it is transitioning through a radical moment in history. While many may feel confounded by the larger threats posed by environmental change, artists, designers, and craftspeople are at the forefront of asking what our relationship to the environment is, has been, and could be, going forward.
