IYCFE - A Scientific Repository

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the Infant Feeding in Emergencies (IFE) Core Group, we are delighted to share with you the Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) Repository compiled by Johns Hopkins Centre for Humanitarian Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University and the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The repository originates from the identified need to develop a system to compile and share new IYCF-E research. It provides a summary of peer-reviewed papers on IYCF-E since the 1st of January 2022 and is updated on a quarterly basis. To receive email updates on new research, please subscribe to our email list (here).

Since the 1st of January, 23 peer reviewed articles have been published on IYCF-E – please see the article summaries here. In addition to international reviews the repository provides emerging evidence from Iraq, Bangladesh, Colombia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Indonesia, Lebanon, Italy, Turkey, the United States and Australia.

Several articles analysed infant and young child feeding practices, barriers and experiences in emergencies. One systematic scoping review assessed the evidence base on violations of the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and found violations have continued through diversifying tactics, communication channels and products.

Another study identified factors that contributed to following (‘good practice’) or not following (‘poor practice’) the Operational Guidance on Infant Feeding in Emergencies regarding infant formula distribution in the 2014–2016 European refugee crisis. Articles also explored topics such as infant feeding in the context of Ebola and HIV, complementary feeding programmes after disasters, and environmental contaminates in breastmilk during the Australian bushfires of 2019/2020.

Please see the repository for a full list of articles. Please also share the repository with anyone you think it may be of interest to.

Happy reading!
