A Message from our CE

On Friday 1 August we were officially established as an independent Crown entity.  We were first established as a business unit of the Ministry of Social Development in 2019 and then established as a departmental agency in May 2023. Becoming an Independent Crown Entity is the final stage in growing our maturity as an organisation and while our work won’t change, it does mean we have additional independence from Government.

We are really fortunate to have Dr Ang Jury as the inaugural chair of our board. She brings a wealth of system-wide experience and is already familiar with our work – I’m looking forward to working with her. Read about Ang on our website.

Nova, Shelley and I all remain in our roles as the executive leadership team. The board of an independent Crown entity usually appoints the chief executive. In our case, the Minister decided to make an exception to the Crown Entities Act and continue my appointment through to the end of my initial three-year term – in 12 months. This means I can focus on getting the board inducted and engaging closely with them as we establish our way of working together. Leading this organisation is an immense privilege.

While we have put new systems and people in place to manage our own finance and payroll and to support our board, other parts of our mahi have not changed and our monitoring and reporting have remained on schedule. We have recently completed monitoring visits in Greater Wellington and Te Tai Tokerau and monitoring is underway in Waikato. Our kaimahi (staff) are writing our follow-up report to our earlier Towards a stronger safety net to prevent abuse of children. Our analysis is also underway on data and information for our next report on compliance with the National Care Standards Regulations. Read more about our work below.
