4 October 2023

Naa Marni,

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the many CALHN staff involved with projects recently selected as finalists for a SA Health Award. Well done to Associate Professor Robert Bryant and The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Service at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital on being a finalist in the Minister's Research and Innovation Award. There is a video and article below with details about this group’s excellent work in the area of inflammatory bowel disease space. Congratulations also to Professor Guy Ludbrook and the Advanced Recovery Room Care team whose research and care are reducing complications after surgery by 50 per cent - this is an impressive outcome.

Dr Liz Sutton
Director, Research

Both lines of research have already had a huge positive impact to the care we provide. There is much more to come from what I have seen meeting with colleagues and hearing about their great work across our network.

Speaking of great work, this month’s guest note is 'From the desk of...' Associate Professor Marcus Wagstaff with an update from the Royal Adelaide Hospital Skin Engineering Laboratory. Laboratory-grown skin sounds like science fiction, but this is now a reality. It is hard to put into words the impact that this pioneering work has on patients with major burns. This is world-class research, which leads to quality care and better patient outcomes.

Lastly, this is the last newsletter before RAHsearch Week, starting on 16 October. I really encourage you to register now for our community sessions on the latest breakthroughs in research and the impacts they will have on the health of our community. Don't miss your chance to hear from Clinical Associate Professor Shilpa Jesudason and Associate Professor Mark Plummer.

Producing lab-grown skin for human wounds

The RAH Skin Engineering Laboratory continues to pioneer research into lab-grown skin. We are producing skin that is consistent in quality and available in large sheets, with the ultimate goal of cost-effective automation and hands-free processing.

Having a purpose-built bioreactor, kindly donated by Skin Tissue Engineering Pty Ltd, is a huge step towards this goal. The learnings from our first-in-human use have increased our insight into the technology and enabled the research to progress.

Associate Professor Marcus Wagstaff
Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon

We have a clear research strategy and program for the future and continue to refine the process for the reconstruction of wounds following major burn injury, and other causes of widespread skin loss. Contact us if you want to know more, and watch this space, as we fill it in with skin!
