NEWS UPDATE04 April 2025 Publishers noteIt is no secret that registration data for our industry is inadequate. As I have mentioned before, over the years, I have frustratingly attempted to compile meaningful data for the industry's benefit. Data is a powerful asset that can help our industry perform better, produce more efficiently, and ultimately become more prosperous. That said, based on the data I was able to gather many years ago, it appeared that Telwater, by volume, was responsible for producing nearly half of all boats made in Australia. Their brand portfolio was extensive, including well-known names such as Quintrex, Stacer, Yellowfin, and Savage. Among these, Quintrex and Stacer led in production volume. In October last year, we shared the news that BRP had launched the process of selling its Marine Businesses. The announcement was somewhat concerning, as while the portfolio was highly appealing, very few businesses had the capacity to undertake such a significant acquisition. A suitable buyer was essential to ensure our industry did not face a major gap. This week, it was announced that Yamaha Motor Australia Group has acquired Telwater. The caveat was added that the acquisition is contingent upon obtaining the necessary approvals, permits, and clearances required by competition laws and other regulations. While this is not Yamaha’s first foray into having a boat brand within its portfolio, this acquisition is certainly a welcome one. We hope Yamaha will invest heavily in research and development, quality control, and strong management to ensure these brands thrive—for the benefit of Yamaha, Telwater, the industry, and, most importantly, the consumer. Our best wishes to the new Yamaha/Telwater team for a successful future. I do hope you enjoy this week’s news.
