Fact of the day
This building was moved, and no one felt it.
In 1930, engineers managed to rotate a 7-storey, 11,000-tonne building without disrupting its operations. They lifted the building with hydraulic jacks and then used hydraulic rollers to move it at 40 cm per hour. The project took 34 days to complete, and occupants reported not feeling the movement at all.
WORD OF THE DAY
Ghostly
Strange and chilling. For example: ‘The ghostly figure vanished into the mist.’ Pronounced as GOWST-LEE.
