Week of June 10, 2024

Michael Garcia
Chief Executive Officer
Houston Methodist Sugar Land

This week I want to celebrate and champion the incredible spirit of giving that defines Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. In health care, we have the ability to not only help our patients, but to help our community.

This commitment was beautifully demonstrated last week with our cereal drive. When I stopped by last Friday during the drop off, I was excited to see so many departments drop off their donations. But what I couldn’t imagine was the end result - more than 600 boxes of cereal. I know this is going to make such a difference for so many families in need. You can read more about the cereal drive in the newsletter below but I personally wanted to say thank you.

Now, many of you may still be working through the aftermath of the May 16 storm that took us by surprise or another recent weather event that damaged your property. The Employees Helping Employees program — a resource funded by employees for employees — helps our co-workers who may encounter unexpected hardships. It offers a lifeline during times of crisis, providing financial assistance to those facing challenges beyond their control. It is also another way we see our I CARE values in action.

If you want to help your co-worker in need, you can contribute through payroll deduction by following these steps: MARS > Payroll and Compensation > Voluntary Deductions > Add Voluntary Deduction. You can also make a gift by filling out this form.

Life’s uncertainties remind us of the importance of solidarity within our community. If you can, please consider contributing to this cause. Even the smallest donation can make a significant difference in the lives of those we work with daily.

Remember, there’s strength in numbers. If each of us contributes just a small amount, we can make a big difference. For instance, if 100 of us contribute $5 per paycheck, we can direct $13,000 annually to help our co-workers in need. Your support, no matter the amount, is deeply appreciated. By supporting each other and extending our care to those around us, we are creating a stronger community for all. Thank you for the compassion you show every day.

5S - SHINE phase

We are now in the fifth month of our 5S journey. The third phase is SHINE, which builds on our earlier 5S work and helps us eliminate dirt, dust and other contaminants, continuing our quest to increase safety and quality and create efficient workspaces. Keeping our areas clean will make it easier to see when there is a problem. Click here to learn more about the SHINE phase.

Create an Entity Sustainability Committee

The Office of Sustainability supports entity sustainability committees at the Houston Methodist Research Institute, Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital and Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. These committees are pivotal in raising awareness, implementing sustainable initiatives and fostering an eco-conscious culture among staff. We encourage employees to join their local committee or start one for their campus. Sustainability committees can be a positive multiplier, helping lead to a reduced carbon footprint, improved resource management and cost savings. As a sustainability committee member, you will have the opportunity to shape your local mission and vision and connect them with the Office of Sustainability’s mission and our I CARE values. To learn more about our mission, please click here. For questions about joining or starting a sustainability committee, please contact sustainability@houstonmethodist.org.
