Our regular newsletters will provide important updates about the crash towing industry reforms including legislative changes that may affect how you operate. Personal protection equipment for towing workers standards 2024We are working to finalise regulations that will support standards for personal protective equipment for towing workers. A towing service provider or towing worker must comply with the standards at all times when driving, operating, standing, communicating with persons or assisting in the use or operation of a tow truck in Western Australia. All people must at all times wear:Industrial clothing made from a material which complies with AS 4399 – 2020.
Fully enclosed protective footwear as classified in AS 2210.3-20191.3.
Reflective clothing, which is clearly visible, and which may be:- during daylight hours a fluorescent shirt, which complies with AS/NZS 4602.1- 2011 Amd 1:2016
- during
daylight hours a vest or jacket which complies with AS/NZS 4602.1- 2011 Amd 1:2016, or
- during hours of darkness a fluorescent shirt, vest or jacket that also has reflective markings and meets AS/NZS 4399-2020, AS/NZS 1906.4-2023 and AS/NZS 4602.1- 2011 Amd 1:20162
During wet weather, all persons must wear when working outside a tow truck:Rain wear with reflective markings manufactured with materials approved under AS/NZS 1906.4-2023All persons are also required to have
available for their use- Protective gloves, which comply with AS/NZS 2161.3:2020 Cut 3 glove or F cut glove and are also compliant with ISO 374-1:2016 for chemical risks, when preparing a motor vehicle to be loaded onto or unloaded from a tow truck;
- Surgical gloves, which comply with ISO 374-5:2016 for micro-organism risks, when dealing with blood and fluids in or around a motor vehicle;
- Protective broad spectrum sunscreen lotion, cream, lip balm or spray with a minimum SPF rating of 50+;
- Headwear that complies with AS
4399 – 2020 and provides UPF 50+ sun protection for your head, face, ears and neck; and
- Protective sunglasses of a standard of at least AS 1067.1:2016 Amd 1:2021 and AS 1067.2:2016 Amd 1:2018
