Recent discussions within the federal government have raised concerns in the nonprofit sector about expanding executive authority to revoke 501(c)(3) status. Proposals have ranged from targeting organizations suspected of promoting terrorism to nonprofits misaligned with an administration’s political priorities. These conversations have understandably sparked anxiety among some nonprofit leaders. However, it’s important to clarify that tax-exempt status cannot be revoked by executive order or unilateral action. The term “furlough” often pops up in the news during times of economic uncertainty—but what does it actually mean, and how does it differ from a layoff? In this episode of the PBPA Podcast, we explore the key distinctions between furloughs, layoffs and reductions in force to help nonprofit organizations understand some of the options available to them to reduce their workforce on a temporary or more permanent basis. Emily Borna with Jackon Lewis joins us to break down the nuances of each option, including potential legal risks and compliance considerations that employers should keep in mind.

Establishing an Endowment: When Does It Make Sense?

Every nonprofit fundraiser wants to land that transformational gift, but some major gifts come with major complexity. For example, your donor might propose a substantial gift but want your nonprofit to use it to establish an endowment. If you accept that gift, your staff and board might be thrilled, but what have you just signed them up for? In this webcast we will discuss the basics of endowed funds, how they work, and the work necessary to manage them. We will also discuss alternatives to endowments and steps nonprofits can take before that gift is on the table to clarify the decision of whether or not to accept it.

Community Consulting Teams (CCT) is accepting project applications from non-profit organizations for pro bono consulting. Projects will kick off in September 2025. Projects can focus on almost any area of business and should be something that can be completed in 8-10 weeks by a team of 3-5 MBAs/professionals.  For the 2025 Spring project season, 10 organizations will be selected on a rolling basis so get your application in early. You can learn more and apply at http://www.cctatlanta.org.
