Before the Congress

Dear colleagues and friends,
Covid-recovery, and yet uncertainty, characterises Europe as we gather for the AEC Annual Congress and General Assembly in Antwerp on 3-6 November, under the title Building Bridges: Artists as Makers in Society. The final results of our flagship project, AEC - SMS Strengthening Music in Society (SMS) will be presented.
This Congress will be held as a hybrid event, where the physical on site conference also provides the opportunity to be followed online. This is an adequate solution for the current uncertain infection situation in Europe and at the same time, it also represents an appropriate and sustainable way to reach out to an increasing number of colleagues and fellow students within our HMEIs.
Before the Congress, I hope you will enjoy reading this newsletter which provides important updates on advocacy work, Erasmus+ projects, the new EU-support for the Music Ecosystem-MusicAIRE as well as upcoming masterclasses for conductors in St. Petersburg.  I am sure the announced SMS conference in London about the future of the UK Conservatories, taking place in the light of a demanding situation for our UK colleagues after Brexit, will be followed with interest by many.

Eirik Birkeland, AEC President
