Learning, Evolving & Moving Forward

A NOTE FROM CODA CEO
FRANCIS NORMAN

When you are deep in the weeds of a major project, it can be hard to see the achievements being made, but when I compare Australia’s progress this decade to the majority of the rest of the world, we have a lot to be proud of. We will never have the length of experience of older jurisdictions, but the experience we have is current and against contemporary regulatory, societal and economic conditions. Thanks to every part of the supply chain coming together, our industry continues to meet its commitments, successfully closing wells, removing infrastructure and recycling recovered materials in one of the most remote parts of the planet.

I had the opportunity to reflect on the experience accumulating in Australian industry in a presentation I delivered at ONS in Stavanger at the end of August, discussing some of the lessons we have experienced and how the Australian industry is rapidly catching up with many other jurisdictions in terms of our decommissioning experience.

Decommissioning here in Australia is in a positive phase of transition. For the last few years, most companies and teams involved in projects have been on incredibly steep learning curves, delivering their first or occasionally second decommissioning project in a very challenging environment. Most of those early projects faced significant issues spanning ambitious schedules and budgets to a maturing supply chain and access to facilities and equipment.

With most of these projects now complete, there has been a lot learned across industry that is now being consolidated to be applied to the next round of projects, which will hopefully mean those next projects will be smoother and more predictable. These next projects should benefit from planning by now experienced personnel, execution based on lived experiences, and a supply chain that has grown and evolved to support the complexity of the Australian requirements.

At CODA, we continue to support the sharing of these critical learnings through our special interest groups in wells, hazardous waste, project management and the women in decommissioning groups. Alongside this program, we have continued to deliver webinars and podcasts, helping to share technologies and experiences not just to the Australian industry but internationally. Additionally, planning is already underway for the 2027 D&A conference, building on its five-year history of bringing industry together to talk.

Partner Spotlight: Pickles Oil & Gas

Pickles Oil & Gas Logo

Unlocking Value from Decommissioning

Pickles Oil & Gas is an asset remarketing specialist that helps operators recover value from surplus, idle and decommissioned oil and gas assets while supporting sustainable decommissioning outcomes.

With more than 60 years of experience and a national footprint of 28 locations, Pickles provides a pathway for industry to divert equipment from waste streams and return assets to productive use where appropriate.

As decommissoning activity continues to increase across Australia's offshore and onshore energy sectors, Pickles supports operators to consider alternatives to disposal. The company specialises in developing asset realisation strategies that prioritise the reuse, repurposing and recycling of equipment, helping clients reduce disposal costs and recover value from assets that may otherwise be scrapped.

Supporting Circular Economy Outcomes

Pickles delivers services including asset valuations, inspections, transport management, storage, cataloguing, marketing, sales and funds management. Its capabilities are supported by a dedicated team of asset specialists and valuation experts who can undertake inspection, preservation, decontamination and NORM handling to prepare assets for resale or redeployment.

The company's experience includes the divestment of OCTG materials, subsea equipment, drilling materials, water treatment plants, line pipe, umbilicals and complete supply base inventories. These projects have delivered outcomes ranging from refurbishment and reuse through to repurposing and responsible recycling, demonstrating the role circular economy principles can play in decommissioning programs.

Asset Remarketing and End-of-life Management

By extending the life of oil and gas equipment and connecting assets with secondary markets, Pickles supports the reduction of waste and the recovery of value from surplus and decommissioned assets. Its approach aligns with the industry's increasing focus on circular economy outcomes and responsible end-of-life asset management.

For operators managing complex decommissioning challenges, Pickles provides asset remarketing services that support value recovery while enabling reuse, repurposing and responsible recycling pathways where appropriate.
