WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST ALUMNI!More than 350 Charles Darwin University students graduated at CDU's Central Australia Graduation Ceremony held in Alice Springs in June, joining more than 70,000 other CDU graduates and becoming our newest cohort of alumni. Students were recognised for graduating from a range of disciplines including business and law, nursing and midwifery, health and human sciences, Indigenous futures, education and the arts, and engineering, IT and the environment. An enormous welcome to you all, and we hope you enjoy your first edition of CDU Alumni E-News!
CDU to open doors and welcome visitors at open days across all of its campusesThousands of prospective students across Australia will get a taste for the university life as they attend open days at Charles Darwin University (CDU) campuses in the coming months. This year, open days will be held at CDU campuses in Casuarina, Alice Springs and for the first time in Katherine, Palmerston and Sydney as well as virtually. Open day events will be a one-stop shop for those who want to explore higher education and vocational training study options and aim to provide information around the University’s hundreds of short courses, higher education degrees and vocational training qualifications.
CDU holds alumni reception in Timor-Leste as part of drive to increase regional partnershipsA delegation from Charles Darwin University (CDU) visited East Timor in June in a bid to drive strategic partnerships and degree and vocational training opportunities. As part of the trip from June 8-10, CDU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman AO and a staff delegation met with universities in East Timor, The Ambassador to East Timor, and key Government Ministers. The trip included a reception which was well attended by CDU Alumni who live in East Timor.
More qualified paramedics for the Northern TerritoryCharles Darwin University (CDU) is educating the next generation of paramedics to grow the local workforce and increase the capacity of primary health services in the Northern Territory. Two new postgraduate courses will support qualified paramedics looking to expand into specialisations that are in high demand in the regions. It comes as CDU has acquired a new fully equipped training ambulance, the first of its kind in the Northern Territory, to ensure trainee paramedics have the modern training that they require to fulfill emergency health roles in paramedicine in the Territory. These courses build on the Bachelor of Paramedicine launched in 2021, which has welcomed students hailing from Darwin, Katherine, Oenpelli, Jabiru, other regional locations and interstate.
First Nations students in Alice Springs celebrated for achievementsMore than 57 First Nations students are graduating from Charles Darwin University's (CDU) Central Australia graduation and valedictory ceremony on June 16. Graduates are recognised for their academic achievements across a range of disciplines in vocational education and training (VET), Higher Education, and PhD. CDU Deputy Vice-Chancellor First Nations Leadership Professor Reuben Bolt said providing adequate resources was essential for First Nations students to achieve academic success. “We are proud to see the accomplishments of our First Nations students as they complete their studies and continue to make contributions to their communities.”
CDU University Secretary recognised with Queen's Birthday HonourCharles Darwin University (CDU) University Secretary, Professor Hilary Winchester, has been recognised with Queen’s Birthday Honours for her contributions to the university. Professor Winchester has been recognised as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her significant services to governance and university administration. Her distinguished academic career began at the University of Oxford, where she completed a trinity of qualifications – Bachelor, Master and Doctorate, which laid the foundations for a stellar career in teaching and research.
New CDU and RMIT joint facility to drive development of the aerospace industry in Northern AustraliaCharles Darwin University (CDU) will house an advanced manufacturing and test flight facility for the development of drones, as well as broader aerospace and defence industry parts. CDU will partner with RMIT University, which will offer its knowledge in the aerospace and defence industry, and Siemens which will provide high-tech software used by leading aerospace, defence and other industries worldwide.
CDU launches new training kitchen as it expands to hospitality in KatherineCharles Darwin University’s (CDU) Katherine Rural Campus has launched a newly refurbished kitchen space as it seeks to expand into the hospitality space for the first time in the Katherine and Big Rivers Region. The newly refurbished kitchen was launched on May 31, with CDU’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality team led by VET Team Leader Culinary Arts and Hospitality Robert Schwerdt serving up some culinary delights for guests.
CDU NAIDOC WEEK PROGRAM Northern Institute presents two seminars for our NAIDOC Week program. You are invited to join us for discussions on First Nations Sovereignty & Diplomacy research and a breakdown of the NT’s upcoming removal of Alcohol legislation with CDU researchers, lecturers and Yolŋu Elders.
CDU attracting international students for city campus by 2024Charles Darwin University (CDU) is undertaking the massive task to attract more international students to fill its city campus due for completion in 2024, as construction progresses. With construction of the campus continuing to ramp up over coming months, CDU’s focus will be attracting international students to grow its student cohort in the Territory who’ll be able to study from the new campus and live and work in Darwin. Darwin residents will see the city’s Community and Education Precinct taking shape as construction progresses on the new city campus for CDU, with the building rising from the ground, as concrete forms, and structure work progress to level two.
First Nations students to create history in national sports competitionFor the first time ever, Charles Darwin University (CDU) will field a team of 14 students and athletes to compete in the Indigenous Nationals, being held in Brisbane. CDU’s team will be called Dangudbila, the Larrakia word for Kangaroo, which represents the team’s journey as they move forward and build strong connections and create pathways for future students. The majority of the students competing at the event are based in Darwin, with others from Howard Springs and Ngukkur, and are studying a range of courses at CDU including arts, law, health science, psychology, and social work.
Building closer connections between the Territory and DenpasarCharles Darwin University (CDU) has joined a City of Darwin delegation on a journey to Denpasar, Indonesia to form close partnerships between the Territory's tropical capital Darwin and Denpasar. As part of the trip, the Lord Mayor of Darwin Kon Vatskalis set up a Sister City agreement between Denpasar and Darwin which will potentially recruit up to 1,000 hospitality, tourism and agriculture workers.
Free coaching for CDU students to support their academic successStudents at Charles Darwin University (CDU) now have access to free student coaching to help them with their professional and academic success. The pilot Student Success Coach Program has commenced by working with students undertaking the Bachelor of Education (Primary), Master of Teaching (Primary) and Bachelor of Law. The coaching sessions involve working with students to help them develop and implement academic, career and personal goals.
STEM on roadshow across the TerritoryCharles Darwin University (CDU) and Inspired NT are launching the 2022 STEM Roadshow which has opened with the NT Schools Solar Car Challenge at CDU. About 40 students from Nakara Primary and Henbury Schools participated in building the fastest miniature solar car on June 15. The event kicked off the 10-day Inspired NT and CDU Outreach Darwin-Alice Springs roadshow run by CDU Science and Engineering students. The roadshow will see the outreach team go to schools in Darwin, Adelaide River, Katherine, Mataranka, Elliot and Alice Springs and run a variety of STEM activities with students from year one to eight. 24 March - 9 July 2022long water: fibre stories illuminates spiritual, ancestral, and physical connections to water through fibre practices of artists from Yuwaalaraay (North West NSW), Quandamooka (Moreton Bay, South East QLD), Kuku Yalanji (Far North QLD), Zenadh Kes (Torres Strait Islands, QLD), Yurruwi (Milingimbi Island, NT), and surrounding homelands. Together this group—Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, spanning different generations and ancestries—share an inseparable relationship to water, be it the vast sea, inland waterways, or expansive river systems.
