Conversation Quicksand
The purpose of dialogue is to build understanding, not win an argument. By Daniel Bral and Hamze Awawde "The quest to be right in conversations is like quicksand. Our minds become trapped in a spiral of anticipation and rebuttal. We become more invested in hearing our inner monologue than hearing the other. In doing so, we lose sight of the real purpose of dialogue: to build understanding, not win an argument… "Most people who wade into these discussions begin on the wrong foot. The goal becomes point-scoring. The conversation is agenda-driven, propelled by the thrill of deploying the cleverest pre-packaged talking point. But this zero-sum mindset not only prevents connection, it preserves the very status quo that generations have found intolerable… "There is nothing wrong with defending causes we believe in. But when that defense becomes rigid, unexamined, and unyielding, it obstructs progress. Real transformation doesn’t come from scripted slogans. It comes from the vulnerability to be wrong, the courage to question inherited loyalties, and the imagination to think differently… "Real dialogue begins with questions. With the courage to hear discomfort. With the willingness to feel the weight of someone else’s suffering, even if that story complicates our worldview. Empathy is not surrender. It is the first act of collective problem-solving… "True dialogue does not demand ideological alignment. It requires shared commitment to the belief that the future must be better than the past…” Daniel Bral is a Jewish Iranian-American writer and speaker. @danielbral.
