Thank you for being part of The Journey,

A very warm welcome to 2024. I hope you had a relaxing break.

With 2024 well underway, the AUSMASA team has kicked off the year with a full schedule of collaborative stakeholder activities, events, projects and consultations.

You will no doubt bump into one of the team as we are out and about and guest speaking at key industry events. We will also be running multiple urban, regional and rural roundtables to ensure we can gather as many industry insights as possible, Australia-wide.

We have Strategic Workforce Advisory Panel sessions planned for February, May, August and November. The Strategic Workforce Advisory Panels (SWAP) will continue to unpack the findings from our Workforce Plan.

Our workforce planning team is in full swing as they prepare our 2024 Workforce Plan. Receiving insights from industry is a critical part of this process, and we invite feedback on our Initial Workforce Plan and involvement in our upcoming Workforce Plan Industry Engagement Webinar outlined below. I would strongly encourage you to attend our interactive online webinar session planned for Wednesday, 6 March, to hear about what the data is telling us for the Automotive and Mining industries.

This week, the federal government pledged a $707 million jobs program for remote areas of Australia. This program marks the first major Closing the Gap policy which covers central and western Queensland, as well as most of Western Australia, excluding major cities. The annual Closing the Gap report for 2023 and implementation plan for 2024 was presented by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the Parliament. He promised to drive cultural change across all levels of government to help address entrenched Indigenous inequality.

Last year, the other JSC CEOs and I met for the second JSC CEO Network Forum to discuss and support ongoing collaboration in delivering the JSC Program. We shared overviews of our priorities for future cross-JSC collaboration and opportunities to support the qualifications reform agenda. The outcomes of this session are now available in the Meeting of the JSC CEO Network Forum – Communique.

We hope your 2024 is off to a good start. As always, we welcome your feedback, so please reach out if you have any suggestions on how we can work with you. The team and I look forward to connecting with you over the coming months.

Industry Roundtables

We arrange meetings with industry to receive feedback. We are always eager to learn about the critical areas of concern, shared problems, and challenges that the industry is experiencing. We are delighted to announce that we will conduct two roundtable sessions in March. The topics will range from the AUR training package to industry stewardship.

The key topics for discussion include:

  • Is electrification an issue in your area?
  • Attraction and retention of staff and feedback on apprentice quality.
  • Does the AUR Training Package match the current industry standards?
  • Pain points, common issues, and challenges

The roundtable discussion will be led by Michael Rose, Manager Industry Engagement, AUSMASA. Our roundtable will be held at two different locations:

Brisbane: Friday 1 March

Townsville: Monday 4 March

Connecting with our Stakeholders

Our CEO, Dr Gavin Lind, enjoyed engaging with staff at the 'Looking to the Future' conference at Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) recently.

Gavin joined a Jobs and Skills Council panel discussion. It was an amazing day, with great feedback from CIT staff, who enjoyed the wealth of knowledge shared by the panellists.

Thank you to CIT for hosting us and we look forward to collaborating with you and your team again in the future.
