Hi ,

Your School may have already let you know if you’ve been affected by the marking and assessment boycott. If you haven’t heard from your school yet, we want to reassure you that our teams are working hard to ensure that you’re clear on what’s next for you.

We’ve outlined some scenarios you might face and what happens next in each instance to reassure you until you have the full picture.

How will I know which scenario I’m looking at?

If your School hasn’t been in touch already, you’ll know which scenario applies to you when available results are released on 13 July. Your School will then contact you as soon as possible to let you know what will happen next.

Please be aware, you may not hear from your School immediately on 13 July as teams work through what impact the marking and assessment boycott has had on your results. If you can wait to approach your School with further queries until you heard if / how you’ve been affected, this will help them prioritise processing marks and communications with you.

If you’re graduating this year

Scenario #1: We have been able to confirm all your marks and we can award your degree with a final classification.

What happens next: Your marks and award will be available to view on 13 July, and you can attend your graduation as planned knowing what classification you’ve achieved.

Scenario #2: The marks of some of your assessments have not been returned, but we are happy that you have met the learning outcomes for your programme, and you have been awarded an honours degree with a provisional classification.

What happens next: You can attend your graduation as planned knowing the minimum classification you’ll receive. Once any missing marks become available, your results will be reconsidered. If this results in a higher award, your result will change. Your classification may go up but will not go down.

Scenario #3: The marks of some of your assessments have not been returned, but we’re happy you have met the learning outcomes for your programme, and you have been awarded an honours degree. Your classification will be calculated when more marks become available.

What happens next: You can attend your graduation as planned, but you won’t know what classification you’ve achieved. We’ll share your classification with you as soon as we can.

Scenario #4: The marks of some of your assessments have not been returned, and we have not been able to confirm that you have met the learning outcomes for your programme. Your final award will be approved once we have more information available.

What happens next: You will receive an interim transcript and letter that you can use with future employers or education providers while we complete the marking on your programme. You can attend your graduation with your classmates, but because we don’t officially award you with your degree on the day, you can still resit or appeal if later if you need to.

If you need to resit, your School will be in touch to explain how that works. This could be over the Summer, or at the beginning of the next academic year.

If you’re worried you might have to resit, sign up for our resits newsletter for more information and support over summer.

If you’re moving on to your next year of study

Scenario #1: We have been able to confirm all your marks, and your marks are fully complete and final.

What happens next: You’ll be able to see all your marks as planned on the expected date, and standard processes for progression will go ahead as planned.

If you need to resit, your School will be in touch to explain how that works.

Scenario #2: The marks of some of your assessments have not been returned, but where possible, module results have been calculated on the information available. Once missing marks are returned, your final module marks will be calculated. Your progression to the next level of study will not be affected due to missing marks.

What happens next: You’ll be able to see all your marks as soon as they are available, and standard processes for progression will go ahead as planned. Missing marks will not affect your progression.

If you need to resit, your School will be in touch to explain how that works.

If you’re worried you might have to resit, sign up for our resits newsletter for more information and support over summer.

Other questions you’ve been asking

If you don’t recognise your situation or need any other information, please see the FAQs on the industrial action webpage based on your questions to us and incoming queries to the Student Information Service.

We will keep updating these to make sure we are capturing everything you need to know. The most recent questions added include:

  • I’ve been told that some of my module marks are incomplete. What does that mean?
  • I haven’t received some module marks at all. When will I get them?
  • I haven’t got enough credits to progress to the next year of study due to missing marks. Do I need to take a year out?
  • I have failed some modules but I’ve been told that I can’t resit them in August. Why is that?
  • I’ve been told that I’ve been awarded a degree but haven’t got a classification. What does that mean?
  • My work has been marked by someone other than my tutor, how do I know that this is a fair mark?
  • I think that I will need to take a resit in August, can I still attend graduation?

We know this is a worrying and frustrating time for you, and we’ll continue to share updates as soon as we have them. In the meantime, make sure you reach out to your School or the University’s support services if there’s anything you need.
